CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Five Salukis won event titles and several SIU alumnus dazzled in the throwing circle on day one of the Don DeNoon Invitational Friday night inside the SIU Recreation Center.
Â
The big story of the day came in the circle. Friday night's main event, the Elite Division of the women's weight throw more than lived up to its billing.
Â
In a competition that featured three former Salukis and the owners of the three top marks in the U.S., Saluki Hall of Famer Gwen Berry uncorked a toss of 81'-3" to win the event. Berry became the first thrower in the U.S. to surpass 80' this season, and she is now ranked No. 1 in the U.S.
Â
Berry's Olympic teammate, DeAnna Price, took second with a season-best toss of 76'-11" (23.44m), while Jeneva Stevens finished third and Jessica Ramsey placed fourth.
Â
Isaac Ingram followed up Berry's performance with a huge PR in the weight throw. The Harrisburg, Ill. native unleashed a winning mark of 69'-6.75" (21.20m). His toss not only moves him up to fifth on SIU's all-time list, but he is also now ranked No. 10 in the NCAA. Ricky Hurley also set a PR in the event, as he threw 58'-5.25" (17.81m) to finish third and score six team points.
Â
On the women's side, Freya Block won for the third time this season with a toss of 64'-0.50" (19.52m). Alexis Roberson added to SIU's point total, as she scored four points with a fourth-place finish.
Â
Cara Engel posted the second-best clearance of her career to pick up her third win of the season. The Grayslake, Ill. native cleared 13'-4.50" (4.08m) on her third vault at that height. Katie Trupp finished second to Engel with a clearance of 12'-8.75" (3.88m).
Â
Not to be outdone, Jon Walsh cleared 17-feet for just the second time in his career to win Friday night. Walsh, competing unattached, cleared a personal-best 17'-1.75" (5.23m) on his first attempt at that height. SIU claimed four of the top-5 spots to score 22 points in the event.
Â
Over at the long jump pit, redshirt freshman Fraquan Gaines came in second after he set a PR by more than two feet. Gaines jumped 23'-5.25" (7.14m) to finish second to Zachary Jewell of Central Arkansas.
Â
Earlier in the day, Madison Meyer picked up her first collegiate win in the pentathlon with 3,271 points. Her win in the fourth event of the day, the long jump, helped propel her to victory as she moved from third to first with a jump of 17'-11" (5.46m). From there, the Carterville, Ill. native placed third in the 800m to secure the victory.
