CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The Southern Illinois women's basketball team overcame a 15-point halftime deficit to stun the second-place UNI Panthers, 64-59 Sunday afternoon inside the SIU Arena.
The Panthers (15-6, 9-2 MVC) led by 15 at the half, but the Salukis methodically chipped away at the lead, as they got to within two with 1:32 to play in the third quarter, and later took their first lead of the contest by outscoring the Panthers, 21-9 in the fourth quarter.
The Salukis got contributions from nearly everyone in the second half, led by Kim Nebo's five third quarter rebounds. Nicole Martin had six points in the period while Caitlyn Claussen brought energy off the bench when Southern needed it most.
"It was definitely a total team win," fourth-year head coach Cindy Stein said. "Everybody stepped up. Weather it was Lauren Hartman's putback at the right time, Caitlyn Claussen coming in and bringing great energy, Kylie hitting a shot, or Nicole Martin running the floor hard or Kim Nebo starting us off in the second half- it was someone different every time. We were very balanced, and that's what we wanted to be."
Claussen finished with two points, but it was her energy off the bench that brought praise from her teammates and coach alike.
"We got a great lift from Caitlyn," Rishonda Napier said. "She came in and changed the game. The second she stepped on the court, good things happened."
Napier finished with 14 points, five assists and two steals in 38 minutes, and hit several pull-up jumpers whenever the Salukis needed them most. Kylie Giebelhausen finished with a team-high 17 on 6-of-11 shooting, while Kim Nebo posted her ninth career double-double, as she finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds, with five of the rebounds coming in the third quarter.
Nicole Martin scored 10 of her 13 points in the second half, and was an efficient 5-of-6 from the field. Lauren Hartman, who's put-back with 6:43 left in regulation cut the deficit down to three (52-49), finished with six points and three boards.
SIU shot a season-low eight three-pointers, instead choosing to attack the basket. Southern scored 32 of their 64 points in the paint, and in turn, shot 52.1% (25-of-48) from the field.
The Salukis are back in action on Friday, Feb. 10 when they travel to Springfield, Mo. to take on the Missouri State Lady Bears. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
