Game one of day two of the Rebel Classic started with a spark of offense, then quickly turned to defense. The Aggies scored a run in the top of the first inning after playing small ball to work a runner around the bases. After the run was scored, Savanna Dover silenced State to keep the score, 1-0.
In the bottom of the second inning, and the Dawgs came out swinging. After Merri Anne Patterson reached on an error, Sydney Jones doubled off the wall, putting runners at second and third with no outs. The next batter for SIU drew a walk, loading the bases for freshman, Bailee Pulley, who was making her first ever start. Pulley seized the moment, putting the ball in play to the right side of the field, scoring Patterson from third and tying the game at one. The score wasn't tied for long, as Eyrika Brandenburg brought in another Saluki two batters later, to give SIU a 2-1 lead. In the next inning SIU stretched its lead to three with a two-run home run by Sydney Jones. It was the fifth homer of the season for Jones, which is two more than any Saluki.Â
The score remained 4-1 until the top of the sixth inning. With Nicole Doyle on the mound for SIU, New Mexico State strung three hits together, scoring three runs and tying the game at four.Â
Neither team got any offense going in the seventh, pushing the game to extras. The international tie breaker came in effect in the eighth, and like the seventh, neither team was able to plate a run. It wasn't until the top of the ninth before the tie was broken. NM State scored the runner placed at second and then two more to take a 7-4 lead. The Salukis went scoreless in their half of the ninth.Â
In game two, the Salukis took on DePaul, and this game went to nine innings as well. It was the third-consecutive nine-inning game the Salukis played. Brianna Jones started for Southern and shined. The sophomore pitched all nine innings of the game and gave up five hits.Â
It took the Blue Demons three innings before they were able to score on Jones, getting one across in the third off of two hits. DePaul held the one-run lead until the the top of the sixth. SIU started off the inning with an out followed by a Shaye Harre walk. Brittany Turner came in for Harre to pinch run and then stole second base. With Turner at second and only one out, Katelyn Massa came to the plate. Massa continued to be an RBI machine, knocking a double to the wall, scoring Turner.Â
The game remained tied until the bottom of the ninth. DePaul moved the runner placed at second over to third with a bunt, followed by a sacrifice fly, scoring the game winning run.Â
SIU is 10-13 overall, and 2-3 in extra innings games. The team will be back in action tomorrow for its final game in the Rebel Classic, taking on Portland State at 11 a.m. (CT).
