LAS VEGAS, NEV. - On the final day of the Rebel Classic, Southern Illinois softball run-ruled Portland State, 10-2, in five innings. It marks the second time this season SIU has run-ruled an opponent.
The Salukis blew the game open with seven runs on five hits in the bottom of the first inning. Shaye Harre, Katelyn Massa, Merri Anne Patterson, Maddy Vermejan and Kyleigh Decker each recorded one or more RBIs in the inning.Â
Nicole Doyle went the distance on the mound for Southern, striking out six batters and improving her record to 4-2. Portland State spoiled the shutout in the top of the third with a two-run home run to make the score, 8-2. The homer was the only extra base hit for PSU.
SIU got both those runs back in the bottom of the third. Massa drove one of the two in for her second RBI of the game and her fourth of the weekend.
After the Salukis regained their eight run lead, Doyle needed only 14 pitches to get the final six outs for the win. The victory was Doyle's second on the weekend and fourth this season.
Southern will rest tomorrow and then play Southern Utah on Tuesday at 3 p.m. in Cedar City, Utah.
