JONESBORO, ARK. - The Southern Illinois University women's tennis program took on Arkansas State University today and won, 4-1.Â
The Salukis are coming off two tough losses to Indiana and Louisville. But, you wouldn't have guessed that by how they came out in doubles play. Southern picked up wins at both the No. 1 and 2 doubles spots, to secure the doubles point and take an early lead. Meaghan Monaghan and Vitoria Beiroa played at the No. 1  slot and won 6-3. Right behind them in the No. 2 position were Xiwei Cai and Ana Sofia Cordero, who grabbed the largest margin of victory of any doubles team at 6-2. The third match was sitting at 4-5 before it was called.
Going in to singles with a 1-0 lead, the Dawgs jumped all over ASU quickly. The seniors, Cordero and Monaghan, picked up straight set wins, pushing out SIU's lead to three. It only took two matches before SIU secured their victory, getting a two-set win at the No. 5 singles slot from Yana Golovkina. In the final two matches that did not finish, both Salukis were up one set and winning the second.
The win moves SIU's record back to a win under .500 at, 5-6, with one match still to play this weekend. The team is scheduled to take on Memphis at 10 a.m. tomorrow morning.
