
SIU gets second road win in four days

MONTGOMERY, ALA. - The Southern Illinois University women's tennis program played in the third road game in four days, today, against Alabama State and won, 4-3.
SIU started their day by winning the doubles point. Xiwei Cai and Ana Sofia Cordero played at the No. 2 slot, and won 6-2. After their victory Southern only needing one more doubles win to secure the point. After falling at the No. 1 spot, the fate of the doubles point came down to Polina Dozortseva and Tereza Klocova in the No. 3 doubles match. The two Salukis outlasted ASU's No. 3 pair, 7-6(4), to win and secure the point.
Heading into singles play, the Salukis were up, 1-0. They quickly added two more, with wins from Yana Golovkina and Vitoria Beirao at the No. 5 and 6 spots. Both girls won in straight sets and defeated their opponent in the second set by more than four points. Now up, 3-0, the Salukis only needed one more singles win to seal the match. ASU bounced back quickly, tying up the match, after wins at the No. 2, 4, and 1 singles spots. The final match left was the No. 3 singles, and Klocova was tied at one set a piece, going to a third. With the match on the line, Klocova dominated the third set, winning, 6-1, halting ASU's comeback.
SIU finished the weekend going 2-1 on the road. The two wins boosted their away record to 2-3, and their overall record to 6-7. The team returns home next week for their final nonconference match, against Saint Louis University on Wednesday March 22. The following Saturday (Mar. 25) the team welcomes the reigning Missouri Valley Conference champions, Wichita State, to Carbondale for their first conference match of the season.
