Kylie Giebelhausen tied her career-high with 26 points and became the 27th Saluki to score 900 career points.
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Kylie Giebelhausen tied a career-high with 26 points and Rishonda Napier added 15 points as the Southern Illinois Salukis jumped out early and then held on to defeat the Indiana State Sycamores, 70-66 inside the Hulman Center.
Giebelhausen finished 10-of-16 from the field, including 6-of-8 from downtown. She also set a career-best with five steals, and added four rebounds, three assists, and three blocks. The East Peoria, Ill. native became just the 27th Saluki to reach 900 career points in the win.
"One of my goals was to get to 900 career points," Giebelhausen said. "I had 16 points in the first half, and knew I was 10 away from 900. I had been adding this stuff up and thinking 'I'm going to get it before season ends'. So I accomplished that tonight and I'm very happy with how things turned out."
Giebelhausen's defense also helped the Salukis shut down the Sycamore offense for much of the first half, as she kept Indiana State's leading scorer, Ashley Taia, in check. Taia was 0-for-4 for zero points in the first half.
(Giebelhausen) had a fantastic night," fourth-year head coach Cindy Stein said. "She had really good numbers across the board, especially the five steals. She did a great job on Ashley Taia and shut her down in the first half."
Without Taia, Indiana State's offense managed just 17 first half points. It was the fewest points allowed in a first half by the Salukis in the Stein era, and the fewest since SIU held the Sycamores to just 14 points at the SIU Arena on Jan. 29, 2011.
The Salukis, meanwhile, fired on all cylinders offensively in the first half. The Salukis exploited Indiana State's decision to go underneath screens, which allowed Southern space to shoot from beyond the arc. Giebelhausen, Napier and Carlie Corrigan took advantage, as the Salukis shot 70.6% (12-of-17) from downtown, including making all six of their attempts in the first quarter.
"The first two (went in), and they just felt so natural," Giebelhausen said. "And then they started to go underneath screens, and I was like, 'I'm not going to go where they're going to meet me at, I might as well make them pay for it."
Giebelhausen made three first quarter three-pointers to help Southern build a 23-12 lead after the first stanza. SIU opened the second quarter with a 9-0 burst to build its advantage to 32-12 before the Sycamores cut the deficit to 15, 32-17, to close the half.
The Salukis took their largest lead, 51-26 with 4:20 to go in the third quarter. The Sycamores did not go quietly into the good night, as they outscored SIU 21-10 to open the fourth stanza and got to within four, 67-63 with :31 seconds to go. Napier and Brittney Patrick each sank free throws down the stretch to seal the win.
With the victory, the Salukis improve to 15-13 overall (9-8 in conference play) and clinch their third-straight winning season. In doing so, Southern clinches a top-five seed for next week's Missouri Valley Conference Tournament.
Southern will close out the regular season Saturday at Loyola. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m.
