CARBONDALE, Ill. — Southern Illinois track and field will open the 2017 outdoor season by hosting the Bill Cornell Spring Classic at the Lew Hartzog Track and Field Complex on Saturday, March 25.
Admission is free to all spectators as events kick off with the women's discus throw at 9 a.m. while events on the track begin at 12:30 p.m. with the women's steeplechase.
"We are really excited to finally open up the outdoor season," Director of Track & Field/Cross Country Kathleen Raske said. "We are always excited to host at home and showcase our athletes in front of our hometown crowd. It's also meaningful for the Cornell family to remember Bill in this way."
The Bill Cornell Spring Classic honors three-time Saluki All-American and two-time NCAA Runner-Up Bill Cornell (1962-65), who enjoyed a successful coaching career at Southern from 1982-2000. He was named the MVC Coach of the Year nine times during his 18 years at the helm, and coached 21 All-Americans, four Olympians, three NCAA champions and one NCAA runner-up. The Chelmsford, England native is a member of both the Saluki Hall of Fame (1980) and the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Hall of Fame (2005). He passed away on March 27, 2016.
Southern is coming off a very successful indoor season in which the Saluki men tied for 14th place at the NCAA Indoor Championships, which was their best finish since taking ninth in 1984. SIU had two athletes score at the national meet, including Kyle Landon, who was the runner-up in the high jump. The Chester, Ill. native was joined on the podium by junior Jared Kern, who took fourth in the shot put after a breakout indoor campaign in which he broke both the SIU and the Missouri Valley Conference shot put records.
Most of the Salukis, however, last competed at the 2017 MVC Indoor Championships on Feb. 24-25. Southern won seven event titles and nabbed 15 top-three finishes en route to the men's team finishing second and the women's squad taking fourth.
Raske believes that the Salukis have benefited from being able to train outside, when the weather cooperates.
"We have had the luxury of getting back to training outdoors and getting prepared for the next eight to ten weeks," Raske said. "This is a necessary step to insure the longevity of our athletes, especially as we train to peak come championship season."
Saturday's meet will not be a team scored meet, but will feature athletes from eight regional schools; MVC foes Loyola, Bradley and Northern Iowa as well as DePaul, Eastern Illinois, Western Illinois and Maryville.
Fans can look forward to the addition of several events specific to the outdoor season. The Salukis throwers will have their first cracks at top marks in the hammer, discus and javelin, while the 100 meter dash, the 110m and 400m hurdles, the 3000m steeplechase and the 4x100m relay are all on the docket for Saturday's meet.
