Four top-three finishes highlight day one of Gibson Invitational

Saluki women are in first, men in second after two events.
The Southern Illinois track and field team got the 2017 Gibson Invitational off to a solid start, as the Saluki women are in first and SIU's men are in second after two events Friday evening.
The Saluki women have 19 points, leading Indiana State by six points and Illinois State by seven after the javelin and hammer throw. Southern's men have 18 points and trail only SEMO, who lead the way with 22 points. The Redhawks finished 1-2 in the javelin to score 18 of their 22 points.
The Saluki women scored 15 of their 19 points in the javelin. Charlene Helton led the way with a runner-up finish. The Carrollton, Ill. native threw 106'-03" (32.39m) Friday and was followed closely by Madison Meyer, who took third with a toss of 103'-11" (31.68m). Katelyn Brown added a point to Southern's total with a sixth-place finish.
Nikki Freeman finished fourth in the hammer throw by breaking her personal-best by more than eight feet. The Fox River Grove, Ill. native threw 164'-04" (50.08m) to score four points for the Salukis.Â
The Saluki men tallied 14 of their 18 points Friday in the hammer throw. Isaac Ingram threw 189'-11" (57.90m) to take second while Ricky Hurley threw a personal-best 188'-03" (57.39m) to place third.
Issiac Wingerter added four points with a fourth-place showing in the javelin.Â
Day two of the Gibson Invitational gets underway at noon with the pole vault, high jump, discus, shot put and long jump. Running events begin at 12:15 p.m.
