CARBONDALE, ILL. - The women's tennis team won their third consecutive match in their final home match at University Courts. The Salukis won in dominant fashion, defeating Missouri State, 6-1. The win boosts Southern Illinois' Missouri Valley Conference record to 3-2.
Going into the match Southern was on a two match winning streak, picking up wins against Bradley and Illinois State last weekend. That momentum rolled over into Saturday's match against Missouri State, starting with doubles play. SIU won at every doubles position, easily winning the doubles point. Ana Sofia Cordero and Xiwei Cai took down the Bears No. 1 team, 6-2, for their fourth conference victory. The doubles duo of Polina Dozortseva and Athena Chrysanthou also won, 6-2, at the No. 3 spot. The final doubles match was a close one. Meagan Monaghan and Vitoria Beiroa ended up winning, 7-6, at the No. 2 doubles position giving SIU their first doubles sweep of the conference season. It was also the first time this season all three seniors won in doubles in the same match.
Southern took their 1-0 lead into singles play and kept their foot on the gas. The Dawgs won five of the six single matches, four of which were in straight sets. Monaghan, Dozortseva, and Beirao were dominant at spots four, five, and six, not allowing their opponents to win a single set. Monaghan's win was her fourth straight, keeping her undefeated in conference play.Â
Cai and Chrysanthou also picked up wins for the Salukis, winning at the No. 2 and 3 spots. Cai won in straight sets and Chrysanthou won a hard fought three set match for SIU's sixth and final point. Chrysanthou's victory was her fourth in MVC play, tying her with Monaghan for the most on team.
The Salukis finished their home schedule with a 7-3 record. Since seniors, Dozortseva and Monaghan, began their careers at SIU back in 2013 the Salukis have gone 35-5 in Carbondale, giving them a winning percentage of 87%.
Southern's next match is this coming Saturday at 1 p.m. against Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
