Chad Whitmer named MVC Pitcher of the Week

ST. LOUIS - Southern Illinois starting pitcher Chad Whitmer has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Pitcher of the Week, the league announced Monday afternoon. Whitmer struck out 13 in a complete game at Indiana State on Friday, leading SIU to a 2-1 win.

Whitmer's 13 strikeouts were the most for an SIU player since P.J. Finigan had 17 against Chicago State in 2005. Whitmer allowed just five hits in the game, and he retired 15 of the final 16 batters he faced. He walked just one in his first career complete game.

Whitmer is the second SIU pitcher to earn the weekly honor from the MVC this year, joining closer Ryan Netemeyer. The last time two SIU pitchers earned MVC Pitcher of the Week in the same year was 2005, when Finigan earned the award three times, and Tyler Norrick earned it once.

Missouri State's Jack Duffy was named this week's MVC Player of the Week.
