Kern earns second-straight MVC Field Athlete of the Week honor

ST. LOUIS — For the second-straight week, Saluki junior thrower Jared Kern has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Men's Field Athlete of the Week, the league announced Tuesday.

Kern picked up his first event title of the outdoor season at the Gibson Invitational over the weekend. The 2017 NCAA Indoor All-American won the shot put with a toss of 63'-5" (19.33m). While it did not improve upon his previous best mark, it marks the third time this season that Kern has thrown over 63'.

The Machesney Park, Ill. native still has the second-best mark in the NCAA West Region and is ranked fifth in the NCAA in the shot.

The Salukis have now earned 14 MVC Athlete of the Week honors this season, and it marks the fourth-straight week that Southern has claimed the MVC Men's Field Athlete of the Week award.

The Salukis are next at the Kansas Relays beginning on Friday, April 21.
