NORMAL, ILL. - Shaye Harre hit a grand slam in the top of the seventh inning to lift the Southern Illinois University softball team to a 7-5 win on Sunday. SIU won two out of three in the series and scored a total of 26 runs.Â
The Salukis jumped on top early with three runs in the top of the first. The key hit was a two RBI single by Maddy Vermejan through the right side of the infield. Vermejan had three hits in the game.
The lead didn't last long as Illinois State batted around in the bottom of the first, scoring four runs on three hits and four walks, and knocking SIU starter Savanna Dover out of the game after recording just two outs. ISUÂ tacked on one more run in the bottom of the second inning off Brianna Jones to make it 5-3, but she slammed the door the final five innings, allowing no more runs.
The Salukis were also held scoreless, also, until the seventh. Still trailing, 5-3, Savannah Fisher led off the inning with a line drive single up the middle. Baranski followed with a single up the middle. With runners at second and first, Brandenburg drew a walk, loading the bags for Harre. Harre saw one ball before she launched one over the wall in left center. It was the second grand slam of the weekend for SIU. The four runs gave the Salukis their first lead since the first inning.Â
Jones produced three-straight ground ball outs to secure the comeback victory for the maroon and white. The win moved Jones to 8-7 on the season.
SIU has now won three-straight series to open up Missouri Valley Conference play. The Salukis are in sole possession of first place in the conference standings with a record of 7-2. The team will have a couple days off before Saint Louis comes to town on Wednesday.
