Saluki men take second, SIU’s women finish third in quadrangular meet.
The Southern Illinois track and field team won four event titles at the 90th running of the Kansas Relays, as the Saluki men took second and Southern's women finished third in the team standings Saturday.
The Saluki men finished second to Kansas. The Jayhawks scored 231 points, while the Salukis tallied 157 points. California was third with 140 points, and UMKC took fourth with 101 points.Â
SIU's women placed third with 155.5 points. Minnesota won with 195.5 points, while Kansas claimed runner-up honors with 181.5 points. Cal rounded out the field with 128.5 points.
The Saluki men were led in scoring by Kyle Landon, who accounted for 23 of SIU's 157 points. On the women's side, Southern was paced by Tyjuana Eason, who tallied 23 points across four events, while fellow sprinter Shafiqua Maloney helped score 22 points.
In all, Southern won four event titles, as Landon and Maloney were joined by Warren Hazel and Freya Block in the winner's circle. Hazel won the 400m for the second time this season, while Block took first in the hammer throw for the second time in three meets.
Landon won the high jump with clearance of 7'-1.50" (2.17m). The five-time All-American competed against himself during the meet, as he won the event with his opening attempt at 6'-9" (2.06m). He then sailed over 6'-11" (2.11m) on his second attempt, and after passing at 2.14m (7'-.25"), cleared 7'-1.50" (2.17m) on his first try.Â
That was just the beginning of the Chester, Ill. native's day, as he later notched lifetime-bests in both the long and triple jumps to place second in both events. He cleared 51'-1.50" (15.58m) in the triple jump and 25'-0.50" (7.63m) in the long jump and, in doing so, is again ranked in the top-20 of all three jumps. While he maintains his spot ranked third in the NCAA West Region in the high jump, he moves up to 13th in the long jump and 18th in the triple jump.
Hazel ran a season-best 46.76 to win the 400m and anchored both the men's 4x100 and the 4x400 relay teams. In all, the Old Roads, St. Kitts native helped account for 20 points while his 400m mark from Saturday is the 30th-best time in the NCAA West Region.
Maloney won the 400m for the first time this outdoor season with a time of 54.92. She then helped the Saluki women's 4x100 relay team of Mystique Thompson, Maloney, Eason and Bri'Anna Branch break their own school record. The quartet took second with a time of 45.35 to score seven points, and Maloney and Eason each ran a leg of the 4x400 that added six points with a third-place finish.
Block won the hammer throw with a heave of 200'-7" (61.15m). Her winning toss came on her fifth attempt in the series, and it marked her second throw over 200' this season. The Neposet, Ill. native holds onto the No. 6 spot on the NCAA West Region hammer throw list with her toss from the Bill Cornell Spring Classic on March 25.Â
For the fourth-straight meet, Ricky Hurley set a personal-best in the discus. The Fox River Grove, Ill. native finished fourth with a toss of 179'-5" (54.70m). In doing so, the redshirt freshman remains ranked 22nd in the NCAA West Region in his quest to qualify for the regional meet in his first attempt.
Jared Kern took second in the shot put with a toss of 59'-3" (18.06m). The Machesney Park, Ill. native's runner-up mark came on his first attempt, as he was unable to get another throw in during the series. Fellow Machesney Park, Ill. native Kyle Kling added five points with a fifth place finish in the event.
Speaking of the shot put circle, Saluki alum and volunteer coach Josh Freeman set a huge PR during Friday night's downtown shot put competition to finish second to 2016 Olympic champion Ryan Crouser. Freeman's toss of 68'-7.25" (20.91m) is the third-best mark in the U.S. and 11th-best in the world.
Southern's distance group was led by Hannah Cherry, who scored three points in her outdoor debut with a ninth place showing in the 5000m. The Carbondale, Ill. native ran the fastest 5000m time by a Saluki women this season after she crossed the finish line in 18:06.36. Josh Maier, meanwhile, took seventh in the event with a season-best time of 14:40.78.Â
The Salukis are next in action at the Lenny Lyles Invite, hosted by the University of Louisville. The two-day meet begins on Friday, April 28.
