TERRE HAUTE, IND. - The Southern Illinois University softball team takes a four game winning streak on the road this weekend to take on Indiana State in a three game series. It is the final road series of the year for SIU, they have won five series so far in Missouri Valley Conference play.
QUICK HITTERS
- The Salukis outlasted the Evansville Purple Aces, 1-0, on Wednesday in ten innings.
- Katelyn Massa knocked a double off the wall in the bottom of the tenth to score Sydney Jones from first. It was Massa's second walk off of the conference season. The freshman also had one against Bradley University back on March 18.
- SIU went 1-2 last season against the Sycamores in Carbondale.
- Southern leads the all time series, 72-22.
TWO SERIES LEFT
As of right now the Salukis are in a tie for third place with Wichita State in the MVC standings. SIU has won their last four conference games, starting two Wednesday's ago in Evansville. The Dawgs put up ten runs on the Purple Aces in game two of the doubleheader to get their first win of their current streak. SIU then came home and swept Wichita State in a doubleheader, followed by a huge ten inning win over Evansville on Tuesday.
This weekend the Salukis will take on Indiana State, who is in last place in the MVC standings. The Sycamores have lost four of their last five series in the valley, most recently to Loyola University. After this weekend Southern comes home for their final games of the season, taking on Missouri State in a three game series in Carbondale. Currently, MSU is in sixth place in the MVC, sporting a 10-11 record in conference play.Â
SERIES SUCCESS
This season the Salukis have won five of seven Missouri Valley Conference series, one more than they did last season. So far this season the team has taken the series against Bradley, Drake, Illinois State, Wichita State, and Evansville. The series against Drake and Wichita State were both sweeps. On top of the series wins the team has also not been swept this season, picking up at least one win from every valley opponent they have played. Head coach Kerri Blaylock has had double digit wins in the MVC every year at SIU, but one. The team added another year (17 consecutive) of having at least 12 wins in the conference season this past week. The past three seasons the team has ended conference play with 15 wins.Â
