Block, Hazel Advance on Day One of West Prelims

The Southern Illinois University track and field team completed the first day of competition at the 2017 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field West Preliminary Round on Thursday in Austin, Texas.
Day one highlights included Freya Block advancing to the 2017 NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Ore. with a lifetime-best mark in the hammer throw while Warren Hazel moved through to tomorrow's 400-meter dash final with a near personal-best of his own.
Block took third in the hammer throw with a personal-best toss of 218'-8" (66.66m). The senior from Neposet, Ill. advances to her first national meet with what was the fifth-best throw in the NCAA this season, and moves her up to fifth on SIU's all-time list.
Hazel took second in his 400-meter dash heat to automatically advance to tomorrow's quarterfinal. The Old Roads, St. Kitts native ran a season-best time of 45.82, taking second to Iowa's Mar'yea Harris, who has the top qualifying time at 45.66.
In addition to running in tomorrow's 400m quarterfinal at 5:45 p.m., Hazel will be back Friday with a run at a berth in the 200 meters, an event in which he took fifth at the Missouri Valley Conference Championships.
Several other Salukis competed Thursday with senior Isaac Ingram finishing 30th in the hammer with a lifetime-best toss of 199'-11" (60.94m). It marked the fifth-straight meet that the Harrisburg, Ill. native has upped his personal-best in the hammer, and he will end his career at No. 8 on SIU's all-time list. Fellow Harrisburg, Ill. product Lucas Horton finished sixth in his 800m heat, and 41st overall, with a time of 1:52.30.Â
Chad Weaver and Nathan Schuck get the day started in the mens pole vault 's 12 p.m., with a total of seven Salukis set to compete during day two of the NCAA West Prelims.
