Track & Field earns USTFCCCA Academic Honors

The Southern Illinois University men's and women's track and field teams, as well as eight individuals, earned U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association All-Academic honors on Thursday.
The men's track and field squad earned a 3.079 GPA, while the women's team finished the year with a 3.291 mark. A total of 360 teams received the honor, including 142 men's teams and 218 women's teams.
In order to be named a USTFCCCA All-Academic Team, a program must compete at the respect national championship meet and have at least a 3.0 cumulative team GPA.
Kyle Landon earned his fourth, and final, USTFCCCA All-Academic honor, while Ricky Hurley, Austin Weigle and Nathan Schuck also represented the Salukis among the 516 men who earned USTFCCCA All-Academic honors for the 2016-17 track and field season.
On the women's side, four Salukis were chosen, led by All-American Freya Block. Block was joined by Bri'Anna Branch, Kilee Hagerstrand and Kezia Martin, who all received the honor for the first time in their respective careers.
For an individual to qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 and have met at least one of the following athletic standards:
- For the indoor season, a student-athlete must have finished the regular season ranked in the national top 96 in an individual event or ranked in the national top 48 (collective listing) in a relay event on the official NCAA POP list provided by TFRRS.org
- For the outdoor season, a student-athlete must have participated in any round of the NCAA Division I Championships (including preliminary rounds).
