The Southern Illinois men's and women's cross country teams are set to open the 2017 season on Saturday, Sept. 2 at the Golden Eagle XC Invitational, hosted by Tennessee Tech.
The men's 6K race begins at 9 a.m. CT, followed by the women's 5K race at 9:45 a.m. The Salukis will be joined at the six-team event by Auburn, Mississippi State, Tennessee State, Western Kentucky and the hosts, Tennessee Tech.
The men's squad returns five runners from last year, led by redshirt junior Josh Maier. Maier returns after he opened the 2016 cross country season with back-to-back wins en route to a 13th place finish at the MVC Cross Country Championships. Including Maier, Southern returns its top-three runners from last season. SIU also has four newcomers, Canoy Tyree, Jacob DeWitt, Michael Church and Theo Hassim, who could make their collegiate debuts this weekend.
The women's team brings back eight runners from a year ago on what will be a senior-laden squad. Seven of SIU's 13 runners are seniors. Southern's top runner from last season, Natalia Hajduk, returns, as do fellow seniors Claire Darnell, Shannon Effron, Chrissa Harris, Alexandra Martel, Hillary Merrill and Kelly O'Shea. Redshirt sophomore Megan Krolak, who transferred from Illinois State, will make her much anticipated Saluki debut at the Golden Eagle XC Invitational.
Last season, the Saluki women finished seventh and the SIU men took eighth at the 2016 MVC Championships. Southern's women were picked to finish sixth while SIU's men notched the No. 7 spot in the 2017 MVC Cross Country Coaches Preseason Poll.
The Salukis will race in a total of five regular season meets during the 2017 season before traveling to Springfield, Mo. to race in the 2017 MVC Cross Country Championships, hosted by Missouri State, on Sat. Oct. 28. Southern will continue championship season at the NCAA Midwest Regional, hosted by Iowa State, on Nov. 10Â in the hopes of qualifying several runners for the 2017 NCAA Championships, hosted by Louisville, on Nov. 18.
