Community Fun and Fitness Relays fund-raiser event scheduled for Sept. 23

The inaugural Community Fun and Fitness Relays fund-raiser event is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 23 at the Lew Hartzog Track and Field Complex located on the SIU campus.
This event is designed to bring teams from schools, church groups, families and friends together to compete in relay races on the SIU track and raise money for two worthy causes. Proceeds from the Relays will benefit Carbondale's "I Can Read" literacy program as well as the Obo-Kwahu village in West Ghana.
After opening ceremonies at 9, the first relay will start at 9:30 a.m. The relays will feature 4x100, 4x400 and distance medley relay races as well as dashes for children ages 3 to 11. There will be Ghanaian music, drumming and cultural items as well as a Health Fair. Sponsors of the event include Saluki Athletics, Southern Illinois Healthcare (SIH) and the Carbondale Park District.
Registration fees are $60 per team for the relays and $10 per child for the dashes. Register online or print the registration form from the website and drop it off at the Life Community Center. You can also register the day of the Relays. A description of relay divisions and a tentative race day schedule may also be found on the website. Questions may be directed to gocffr@gmail.com.
