Salukis men and women win by big margins
The Salukis logged their first meet victories of the 2017-18 today as the men's and women's teams down in-conference foes Evansville on the road.

The event, which featured only diving and relay events was dominated by Southern with the Salukis posting fastest times in 13 of the 15 races and sweeping the four diving events.

The meet started on Saturday night with the men's and women's one and three-meter dives. In the one-meter dives, Southern's Eli Mercado won for the second-straight week with a score of 290.17. In the women's one-meter dive, Jiaxin Ji finished first with a score of 278.62 to finish with more than a 50-point cushion between her and Evansville's Natalie Gerard who was second.

In the three-meter dive, Mercado squeaked out a win by less than one point over Evansville's Miguel Marcano. On the women's side, Jiarong Ji, earned her second victory in the three-meter dive of the year. Her final score of 278.77 was more than 100 points better than Evansville's Alyssa Vonder Haar who was second with a score of 149.92.

Saturday's relay races kicked off with the women's 400-yard freestyle relay. In that event, Southern's foursome of Kelsie Walker, Bryn Handley, Chandler Ott and Jordan Ries finished in first with a time of 3:35.25. They were nearly seven seconds faster than the next relay team.

The men's team of Matt Ciezczak, Reilly Garman, Kevin Kluge and Nolan Fahey also took home first in the 400-yard freestyle relay. The team swam the race with a time of 3:13.13 to just edge out the second place team.

In the Women's 200-yard freestyle relay, Southern's team of Walker, Ott, Handley and McKenna Avery earned the Saluki women their second relay final's win with a time of 1:38.74. The men also won the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:27.63.

The Salukis will be back in action on October 7 when Southern travels to Springfield, Mo. to take on the defending MVC Champions, Missouri State.
