Four Salukis record double-digit kills in the win over the Crusaders.
CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Four Salukis recorded double-digit kills as the Southern Illinois University volleyball team defeated the Valparaiso Crusaders in four sets, 25-21, 25-22, 16-25, 26-24 Monday night inside Davies Gymnasium.
SIU moves to 2-1 in MVC play with the win, and 3-11 overall. Valpo remains in search of their first Valley win, as they have now lost three-straight to open their inaugural season in the MVC and fall to 7-8 overall.
The Salukis cruised to wins in set one and two, hitting over .300 in both sets. The Crusaders came back to take set three convincingly, before the Salukis overcame a six-point deficit in the fourth set to win the frame and the match.
"We knew this home stretch is really important for us," first-year head coach Kari Thompson said. "With Valpo being new to the league, it was good the way we were able to figure them out. (Valpo) made some changes, started with a 6-2 and did some different things, but we adapted to the changes well. I'm happy with that, and happy to have momentum on our side, especially when we are at home."
Patience Brown tied her season-best with 14 kills while hitting at a .417 clip, while Maggie Nedoma put down 14 kills on 29 swings. Andrea Estrada tallied her 48th career double-double, as she finished with 11 kills and 15 digs. She also hit .308, which marked the second time this season that the outside hitter from Bogota, Colombia has hit over .300.Â
"We came into the match with a strong mentality that we had to win,"Â Estrada said. "No matter what we were going to fight. Watching film on (Valpo), we knew what they were going to do and we were ready for them. I think we did pretty good tonight."
Kolby Meeks was the fourth Saluki in double figures, as she notched 12 kills and added three blocks. It marks the third time this season that the Norcross, Ga. native has finished with double-digit kills. She was the emotional leader on the floor for the Salukis on Monday night, as she helped stake SIU to an early lead by putting down five of her first nine attempts.Â
"I really liked what Kolby did as a leader on the floor today," Thompson said. "She really was that emotional heart (to the team). That's something we know she can bring on a daily basis."
Abby Barrow was almost the fifth Saluki in double figures, as she finished with nine kills and 11 digs. Barrow, along with Estrada and Ashley Edelen, anchored a back row defense that kept the Salukis in system and on the attack. The Salukis hit .306 as a team, their second-best hitting percentage this season.
"(The back row) did a great job," said senior outside hitter Nellie Fredriksson. "Andrea was everywhere at the end of the (fourth) set. Its so nice as a blocker when you can go up, and even if you don't touch it, you know they are going to have your back."
Edelen finished with a game-high 20 digs in the win and added four digs. Alayna Martin dished out 34 assists and added a career-best 17 digs for her third career double-double, while Rachel Maguire tallied 24 assists, two aces and eight digs.
The Salukis are back in Davies Gym on Friday, Sept. 29 when they host the Evansville Purple Aces. First serve is set for 7 p.m.Â
