CARBONDALE, Ill. — The Southern Illinois volleyball team dropped a four-set decision to the Indiana State Sycamores Saturday night inside Davies Gym. The Salukis won the first set, 25-21, before the Sycamores rallied to win each of the next three sets by the scores of 25-21, 25-23, 25-19.
The Sycamores (5-11, 3-1 MVC) snapped a five-match losing streak to the Salukis with the win, as Indiana State won in Carbondale for the first time since Nov. 5, 2011.
"(Indiana State) did a nice job offensively and stayed balanced within their offense," first-year head coach Kari Thompson said. "I think we got one-dimensional with our offense at times, and that made us easier to defend."
SIU's attack was led by Maggie Nedoma, who finished with a team-high 14 kills. Andrea Estrada notched her team-leading fourth double-double of the season with 10 kills and 12 digs. Kolby Meeks hit a career-best .667 and put down 13 kills on 18 swings with just one error. Abby Barrow totaled her second-straight double-double, as she posted 11 kills and 20 digs.
SIU setter Alayna Martin dished out a team-best 35 assists and added seven digs while Rachel Maguire tallied 21 assists and 12 digs for her third career double-double. Libero Ashley Edelen totaled 15 digs.
SIU hit .208 and held Indiana State to a .106 hitting efficiency in the first set, with Barrow recording seven of her 11 kills in the frame. The Sycamores led 15-13, but a kill by Estrada tied the set, 16-16. The Trees went ahead 19-17, before back-to-back kills by Barrow and a pair of Sycamore attack errors gave Southern a 21-19 edge. Indiana State got to within one on the next serve, but that was as close as they could get.
After the Sycamores tied the set score, 1-1 with a 25-21 win in the second set, Indiana State was able to pull out a back-and-forth third frame that saw both teams hit well over .350. The Salukis hit .368, but the Sycamores got the last laugh, as they hit .394 to pull out a 25-23 victory in the third set.
"When you look at the third set, we had 18 kills and hit .368 and they had 14 kills and hit .394," Thompson said. "That's good volleyball. I would've liked to see more defensive effort on our part. I think we struggled a little bit trying to figure out their hitters while they figured out our hitters a little quicker."
The Salukis got out to a 4-1 lead in the fourth set, but six-straight points by Indiana State gave the visitors an 8-5 lead. Southern went to its bench, getting a kill from Hannah Becker in a 4-0 run to regain a 9-8 lead. The Trees broke an 11-11 lead with four-straight points, and built a five-point lead that they never relinquished.
SIU returns to the court on Saturday, Oct. 7 when they it hosts Missouri State at 7 p.m. inside Davies Gym.
