PEORIA, Ill. — Nicole Martin made a pair of go-ahead free throws with six seconds remaining and the Southern Illinois women's basketball team improved to 4-1 in Missouri Valley Conference play with a 63-62 win over the Bradley Braves on Friday night inside Renaissance Coliseum.
SIU has now won seven-straight over Bradley and improves to 8-1 under head coach Cindy Stein against her hometown Braves. Bradley falls to 9-6 overall and 3-1 in Valley play with the loss.
The clutch free throws by Martin was part of a tense fourth quarter that featured 10 lead changes and six ties. After a layup by Anneke Schlueter gave the Braves a 60-59 lead with 59 seconds to go in regulation, Kylie Giebelhausen peeled off a screen and sank a runner in the lane with 32 seconds left to give Southern a 61-60 lead. Bradley answered with a layup of its own to take the lead right back with 23 seconds remaining and the Salukis called its final timeout to draw up a play.
"We were looking for Kylie and Makenzie," fifth-year head coach Cindy Stein said of the final play. "We had two screens set up for them but Nicole read it well. They switched out, so she had a little on her. She flashed right back to the ball and got a good look at the basket. They panicked a little bit and fouled her and we will take it."
With eight seconds remaining, Giebelhausen fed the ball into the post to Nicole Martin, who realized she had a mismatch, spun around and fired from 10 feet away. Her potential game-winner clanked off the iron but she followed her own miss and grabbed the rebound and, in the process, drew a foul.
"In times like this I'm not usually the one to go to, but Kylie was like 'you're open, here's the ball,'" Martin said. "So I had an open shot and I took it and I knew if I missed it, I would've cost us the game. So I was like 'I have to follow (my shot) regardless.'"
Martin calmly sank both free throws to seal SIU's seventh-straight win over Bradley.
"After I missed the shot, I was happy I got fouled but at that point I was mad because, in my opinion, I played bad," Martin said of her mindset leading up to her free throws. "I have to make these. It was more so out of anger that I knew I was going to make (both free throws) because I had to."
The Salukis had three score in double figures, led by Makenzie Silvey's team-best 13 points. Abby Brockmeyer notched her fourth career double-double with 12 points, 13 rebounds and three blocks while Martin finished with 11 points in 13 minutes off the bench. Brittney Patrick dished out a career-high eight assists and recorded just one turnover while Giebelhausen tallied nine points, five assist, two blocks and two steals.
The Salukis opened up a seven-point lead at the end of the first after Silvey scored five-straight points to close the period. SIU opened the second quarter on a 12-4 run to build a 15-point advantage, 30-15, with 4:40 to go in the first half. The Braves countered with a 12-5 spurt to close the half and get to within eight, 35-27.
Bradley went to its bigs to get back into the game, as it scored 22 of its 35 second half points in the paint. BU's Vanessa Markert, who had just two points in the first half, scored 11 points in the second half to get the Braves back into the contest. A pair of Markert free throws tied the contest, 41-41 with 3:47 in third. The score remained tied until Kylie Giebelhausen connected on a long three-pointer from NBA range with 1:05 remaining in the period to stake Southern to a 48-45 lead at the end of three.
Southern won the rebounding battle, 37-to-34, and finished with a season-low eight turnovers.
The Salukis will try for its second-straight MVC win on Sunday at Illinois State. Tip-off against the Redbirds is set for 2 p.m.
