Salukis suffer first road MVC loss of the season
BLOOMINGTON, Ill. — The Southern Illinois women's basketball team suffered its first road Missouri Valley Conference loss of the season Sunday, as the Illinois State Redbirds defeated the Salukis, 49-46 Sunday inside Redbird Arena.
The Salukis (9-8, 4-2 MVC) led by as many as 10 but struggled offensively in the second half, which left the door open for the Redbirds. Illinois State took advantage as it shot 50% (11-of-22) from the floor in the second half and held SIU to 22.5% (7-of-31) shooting over the final 20 minutes of play to win their first MVC game under first-year head coach Kristen Gillespie. The win also snapped SIU's four game winning streak over Illinois State (7-9, 1-4 MVC).
Southern turned the ball over just nine times and forced a season-high 24 turnovers but could not overcome its offensive woes. SIU shot 26.2% from the field, including 30% (4-of-13) from behind the arc. ISU also enjoyed a significant advantage on glass as it out-rebounded SIU, 47-to-34 despite being undersized and playing just seven players.
"We couldn't hit a free throw and we couldn't hit a shot," fifth-year head coach Cindy Stein said. "We had good looks. When you can't make a 15-foot free throw with no one on you, it makes life tough. We had some baskets underneath that we just missed. You have to give credit to Illinois State. They outplayed us in a lot of areas with the hustle area being number one."
Illinois State took their first lead of the game on a 3-pointer by Paige Saylor with 3:39 to go that put the Redbirds ahead 40-39 and whipped the crowd of 1,528 fans into a frenzy. A pair of free throws gave ISU a three-point cushion before a fall away jumper by Nicole Martin got Southern back to within one, 42-41, with 2:23 remaining. Illinois State scored the next five points to take a 47-41 lead with 36 seconds to play but SIU cut its deficit to one after a three-point play by Martin and a steal by Kristen Nelson set up a layup for Makenzie Silvey.
After two free throws gave Illinois State breathing room at 49-46 lead with :15 seconds remaining in regulation, Southern called timeout to set up its offense. The Redbirds were intent on making it difficult for the Salukis to get a three-pointer off at the buzzer, and it worked, as Southern passed on two difficult looks and ended up settling for a baseline jumper as the clock expired.
"We were looking for a three," Stein said of the last play. "Makenzie can create some room, but she didn't get any. (Illinois State) played really good defense on that. Like I told the team, it doesn't come down to the last play. We didn't execute the entire game so you get yourself in a position where you're chasing."
Nicole Martin finished with 11 points and six rebounds to lead the Salukis. Abby Brockmeyer chipped in 10 points and four boards while Kylie Giebelhausen tallied seven points, seven rebounds, four steals, three blocks and three assists.
The Salukis scored the game's first nine points before the Redbirds trimmed the lead down to five with five minutes to play in the first quarter. The two teams went scoreless for the next four minutes before a jumper by Martin ended the scoring drought and gave SIU a 13-6 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Illinois State returned the favor in the second quarter, as the Redbirds opened the period on a 9-2 run to tie the contest, 15-15. The score remained tied until Brockmeyer's first 3-ball made it 20-17. Her second three-pointer of the first half gave SIU a 23-19 lead and Tiajaney Hawkins dished off to Lauren Hartman before the end of the first half to push Southern's advantage to six, 25-19.
SIU grew its lead to double digits in third, as Southern went ahead 31-21 on Giebelhausen's first trey with 7:10 to play in the third. ISU got to within five at the end of the third and later took its first lead on Saylor's three-pointer with 3:39 to play.
The Salukis return to the SIU Arena on Friday, Jan. 19 when they host the Loyola Ramblers. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
