CARBONDALE, Ill. – Three Salukis scored in double figures to help Southern Illinois run away from the Loyola Ramblers, 62-46, Friday night inside SIU Arena.
It was a wire-to-wire win for the Salukis (10-8, 5-2 MVC), who won their fourth-straight over the Ramblers (3-14, 1-5 MVC). Abby Brockmeyer finished with 16 points, six rebounds, three blocks and two steals while Makenzie Silvey tallied 16 points, three assists and two steals and Nicole Martin chipped in 11 points.
The Salukis defense set the tone early, as Southern held Loyola without a basket for the first 6:45 of the contest and the Ramblers shot just 25% (3-of-12) from the field in the first quarter.
"In the first quarter especially we executed what we had planned to do in practices," Kylie Giebelhausen said. "We had active hands, we had guards guarding their post players, we had post players playing perimeter defense and it was really effective."
After the Salukis took their largest lead of the first half, 24-10, on Silvey's fourth trey of the contest with 6:36 remaining, the Ramblers closed the frame on a 14-5 run to cut Southern's lead down to five, 29-24 at the end of the half.
"I think I say this a lot about our team, I feel like we play really hard, we give it our best shot every game, we just need to continue to work smarter," fifth-year head coach Cindy Stein said. "I think thats where we are right now. We had a bad second quarter where we gave them some easy shots."
The Ramblers got to within two, 29-27 courtesy of a 3-ball to start the second half, but from there it was all Salukis. Southern made its first five shots of the third quarter to erupt for an 11-0 run that gave it a 40-27 lead with 6:52 to play in the third. 10 of SIU's 20 third quarter points came via Brockmeyer, who was 4-of-5 from the field in the frame including 1-of-1 from behind the arc.
"We had timely threes," Stein said. "I really appreciate Abby Brockmeyer shooting threes, because I've said all along she's a good three-point shooter. She loves to put the ball down and drive to the basket so its nice to see her be able to pull some people out."
Brockmeyer's second three-pointer of the game put Southern ahead 58-44 with 3:32 remaining. In all, Southern outscored Loyola, 13-7 in the fourth to seal the win.
The win was also significant because it marked the 350th coaching victory of Stein's career.
"It shows I've had some pretty good players to have the honor to coach," Stein said of reaching 350 career wins. "You have to have the players to get that many wins. That's what I appreciate, the players that have played for me. It's a great group."
Southern Illinois returns to action Sunday when it hosts Valparaiso. Tip-off against the Crusaders is slated for 11:30 a.m.
