Southern Illinois senior thrower Jared Kern won the men's shot put on day one of the Indiana Relays Friday night.Â
Kern won for the second time this season with a season-best toss of 62'-11.25" (19.18m). Adam Kessler finished second with a personal-best toss of 61'-3.5" (18.68m), which moved him into a tie with George Woods for seventh on SIU's all-time list.Â
Kessler wasn't the only Saluki shot putter to post a PR Friday, as both Ricky Hurley and Sam Sikon did likewise. Hurley tied his lifetime-best with a throw of 59'-5.75" to place fourth while Sikon set a PR with a mark of 57'-4.75" (17.49m) to finish fifth.
Over at the high jump pit, Tamar Mosby cleared a season-best 5'-3.75" (1.62m) on her second attempt at the height to tie with teammate Justine Paton for third. Paton also cleared her first two bars without a miss and sailed over 5'-3.75" (1.62m) on her second attempt.Â
Sticking with the jumps, Marcellus Fletcher notched a nearly two foot PR in the long jump to finish ninth.Â
On the oval, Theo Phipps cut .10 seconds off his fastest 60m hurdles time this season to finish seventh.
The Salukis are back in action tomorrow at 10 a.m. for day two of the Indiana Relays. Southern will also have a contingent of sprinters and hurdlers competing at the Black and Gold Premier, hosted by the University of Iowa.
