SIU defeats Missouri State in OT behind a career-high 15 points from Brittney Patrick.
CARBONDALE, Ill. — A career-high 15 points from Brittney Patrick fueled Southern Illinois to a 71-69 overtime win over Missouri State Friday night inside SIU Arena.
With the win, the Salukis (12-8, 7-2 MVC) move into second place in the Valley while the Lady Bears fall to 11-9 overall and 7-2 in the MVC. Southern's win over Missouri State snapped a two-game losing streak to the Lady Bears and was Southern's second win over Missouri State under fifth-year head coach Cindy Stein.
"This is a great win because this has been a team that has had our number so its nice to be able to enjoy that," Stein said. "But we still have half of the conference season left to focus on and continue to get better."
Patrick was one of three Salukis to score in double figures, as she finished with 15 points on 4-of-5 shooting from the field. Patrick was also 7-for-9 from the charity stripe on a night in which Southern struggled from the free throw line. The remaining eight Salukis were a combined 3-of-11 (27.2%) from the charity stripe.
Patrick was joined in double figures by Nicole Martin and Kylie Giebelhausen. Martin finished a rebound shy of a double-double, as she had 12 points, nine rebounds and two steals, while Giebelhausen tallied 14 points, seven rebounds, four assists, two steals and two blocks. The East Peoria, Ill. native was crucial to SIU executing its defensive game plan, as she made things difficult all night for the MVC's leading scorer, Liza Fruendt, who needed 23 shots to get her game-high 19 points.
"We had to have a lot of different players step up," Stein said. "What I enjoyed most about the game was Brittney Patrick coming in and being a great leader out there and playing some really tough defense. She also hit some big free throws for us. I thought Rachel Pudlowski came in and hit a big layup for us. Ashley Hummel didn't play a ton of minutes but her six points really helped us in a time when we were struggling and in foul trouble."
The Salukis opened the contest on a 7-2 run but an 8-2 spurt over the final two minutes of the frame gave Missouri State a 20-19 advantage. Giebelhausen got off to a quick start, as she made her first four shots and had 10 points at the end of the first quarter.
In a second quarter that featured 10 lead changes, the Salukis used a three-ball by Makenzie Silvey and a layup by Martin to build a 34-31 lead at the half.
The Lady Bears countered, scrapping together a 7-2 run to start the quarter and take a 40-36 lead with 6:47 to play. Missouri State took its largest lead of the game, 47-42 with 2:48 to play on a layup by Alexa Willard. A layup by Hummel and another by Patrick made it a single possession game going into the fourth stanza.
Missouri State jumped out to a 57-53 lead in the fourth before SIU tied the contest, 60-60 on a pair of free throws by Patrick. After Pudlowski came down with the rebound on Missouri State's ensuing possession, the Salukis called timeout to regroup. After the timeout, Southern milked the shot clock before Patrick slipped by her defender and laid it in to give SIU a 62-60 lead with 33 seconds to play.
The Lady Bears went to their leading scorer, Fruendt, for an answer and she delivered in the form of a layup that tied the game, 62-62 with :18 seconds to go. SIU had a good look at a potential game-winner, but couldn't get the shot to fall.
The Saluki reserves continued to make an impact in the overtime period, as Pudlowksi blew by her defender, snagged the inbounds pass and put it back in to give SIU a 66-64 lead with 2:32 remaining. After a rebound got Southern the ball back, Patrick went 5-of-6 from the free throw line over the final 2:32 to help the Salukis seal the win. Southern's defense was also key, as it held Missouri State to 1-of-11 shooting in the extra frame.
The Salukis are back in action on Friday, February 2 at Drake. Tip-off against the Bulldogs is set for 7 p.m.
