Working Overtime
The Salukis defeated the Missouri State Lady Bears in overtime, 71-69 on Friday, Jan. 26. Southern improved to 3-0 this season in overtime games and SIU's three overtime wins are it's most in a single season in program history. Southern is 6-3 (.667) in overtime games under fifth-year head coach Cindy Stein and 26-18 (.590) all-time in overtime games since the 1974-75 season.
SIU one of only four nationally
SIU is one of 18 teams in the nation to have played at least three overtime games thus far this season. Creighton leads that category, having already played five overtime contests. Of the 18 teams nationally to have played in at least three overtime games, SIU is one of only four with an unblemished record. Albany, who defeated SIU in Puerto Rico earlier this season, American University and North Carolina are the only programs with at least three overtime wins and no losses.
Sharing the load
Brittney Patrick scored a career-high 15 points in the win over Missouri State and led the Salukis in scoring for the first time in her career. She is the sixth different Saluki to lead the team in scoring this season, which are the most for SIU in a single-season since the 2013-14 season in which Southern had seven different players lead the team in scoring.
Rank in the top-3
The Salukis rank in the top-3 of the Missouri Valley Conference in both steals and blocked shots, as Southern is currently second in blocks and third in steals. SIU has never finished in the top-5 of both categories in the same season since the NCAA began recording steals and blocks during the 1987-88 season. The Salukis have only finished in the top-five of the conference in steals four times in the past 30 years, most recently when they finished third in 2007-08. Southern has finished in the top-five of the league in blocks in three of Coach Stein's four full seasons and 17 times in the past 30 years.
Season-best on the boards
The Salukis snagged a season-high 52 rebounds in the win over the Lady Bears. It marked the most rebounds that they have grabbed since Southern recorded 54 in a win over Brescia on Nov. 26, 2016. The Salukis have won six-straight games when grabbing 50-plus rebounds, and are 7-2 under Stein when tallying 50-plus boards.
Contributions from everyone
The Salukis scored 26 bench points in the win over Missouri State, and got significant contributions from several reserves. Brittney Patrick had a career-high 15 points to lead the way, while Ashley Hummel was 3-for-3 from the field with six points in eight minutes and Rachel Pudlowski had five points and a career-best six rebounds in 16 minutes.
Milestone win
Cindy Stein won the 350th game of her career with the win over Loyola on Jan. 19. Her 352 career wins are the most among active Missouri Valley Conference coaches.
Racking up weekly honors
The Salukis have won Newcomer of the Week four times this season after Makenzie Silvey was named the recipient of the award on Jan. 22. It marked the fourth time this season that a Saluki has claimed Newcomer of the Week honors, as Abby Brockmeyer is a three-time recipient of the award. Silvey's win marks the first time since the 2006-07 season that SIU has had multiple players earn Newcomer of the Week recognition during the same season.
Charity Stripe
The Salukis shot 81.5 percent (22-of-27) from the free throw line in their win over Valparaiso, including 9-of-12 from the charity stripe in the fourth quarter. Southern's 22 made free throws were its most since also making 22 in an 87-72 win over SEMO on Dec. 22, 2015.
10-plus steals
The Salukis recorded 11 steals in wins over Loyola and Valparaiso last weekend, which marks the seventh time SIU has swiped 10-plus steals in a game this season. That's the most 10-plus steal games in a single season in the Cindy Stein era, and the most since the 2012-13 season when the Salukis posted eight games with 10-plus steals. The school record for most games with at least 10 steals is 20, set by the 1994-95 Salukis. Southern is 5-2 this season when snagging 10-plus steals and are 118-104 (.531) since 1988 when finishing with at least 10 steals.
Making her freebies
Nicole Martin finished with 18 points in the win over Valparaiso, which marked the 13th time in 19 games this season that she has reached double figures. 12 of her 18 points came at the charity stripe, as Martin knocked down 12-of-13 on Jan. 21. Her 12 makes were a career-high and the most by a Saluki since Cartaesha Macklin made 12 freebies on her way to a career-high 34 points against Florida Atlantic on Nov. 24, 2012. Martin leads the Valley in free throws attempted (99) and is currently second in free throws made (70).

Not only does she rank second in the league amongst freshmen for blocked shots, but she is tied for 19th nationally among freshmen in the category. She also ranks in the top-20 nationally amongst freshmen in rebounds per game, as her 7.3 rebounds per game are the most by a Valley freshman and the 15th-most by a freshman nationally.

• Giebelhausen had two steals in the win over Missouri State and now has 128 for her career, which is the 14th-most in program history. She can pass Jayme Sweere for 13th on SIU's all-time list with 10 steals.
