Salukis fall to the first-place Bulldogs, 75-64
CARBONDALE, Ill. – The Southern Illinois women's basketball team dropped its first Missouri Valley Conference game of the season Sunday, as the Salukis fell to the Drake Bulldogs, 75-64, inside SIU Arena.
The Salukis challenged the defending MVC Champions throughout the contest, as the first half featured six lead changes and one tie. The Bulldogs, however, proved to be too much down the stretch, as they turned 15 second half turnovers into 17 points and converted on 51.9% of their attempts from the field in the final 20 minutes of play to secure the win.
I'm disappointed, but I'm also extremely encouraged," fifth-year head coach Cindy Stein said. "Only losing by 11 to Drake when we coughed the ball up too many times and had so many unforced errors. But were getting the motor running. Some of the offensive stuff we can clean up. This is a great game to have this time of year as it shows us what we need to do better. That's what I'm encouraged about."
The Bulldogs (9-7, 4-0 MVC) showcased their depth and ball movement throughout Sunday's contest, as they had nine play at least 15 minutes. Drake recorded assists on 23-of-28 field goals and 10 of 11 Bulldogs tallied an assist. Becca Hittner led all scorers with 15 points to go along with seven rebounds and seven assists.
Three Salukis (8-7, 3-1 MVC) scored in double figures led by Makenzie Silvey. Silvey, who scored a career-high 17 points in SIU's win over Northern Iowa on Friday, finished with 13 points, five assists and a career-high five steals. Kylie Giebelhausen added 13 points on 5-of-10 shooting to go along with four rebounds, three assists, a block and a steal, while Nicole Martin chipped in 12 points and seven rebounds in 30 minutes off the bench.
The first quarter featured six lead changes and one tie as the Salukis and the Bulldogs tussled for control from the opening whistle. The Salukis took their first lead of the contest, 15-14 on a pair of free throws by Kristen Nelson with 2:42 remaining. Drake canned back-to-back three-pointers to take a 23-18 lead at the end of the first.
Southern used a 9-3 run to take it's first lead of the second quarter at 32-31 with 2:27 to play in the first half. The lead was short-lived, however, as Drake turned three SIU turnovers into a 7-0 run before the half and took a 38-32 advantage into the locker room at the break.
A layup by Rachel Pudlowski got SIU to within four, 47-43 with 5:56 to go in the third, but the Bulldogs countered with a 14-3 spurt to build a double-digit lead that it never relinquished.
SIU will next travel to Peoria, Ill. on Friday, Jan. 12 to take on the Bradley Braves. Tip-off against the Braves is set for 7 p.m.
