Salukis roll to exhibition win over Bearcats
10/26/2018 | 9:34:00 | Women's Basketball
CARBONDALE, Ill. – The Southern Illinois women's basketball team turned up the defensive pressure in the second half and outscored the McKendree Bearcats, 38-12 over the final 20 minutes of play to cruise to an 73-39 exhibition victory Friday night in its first of two tune-ups before its season opener at UT Martin on Nov. 9.
McKendree took its first and only lead at 20-19 with 6:53 remaining in the first half. Southern increased its lead to eight before the half and used a 15-0 run to open the third quarter to build a commanding 23-point lead. The Salukis forced 35 turnovers during the contest and came away with 21 steals, which would have tied the school record set in 1994 had it not been an exhibition.
"We talked at halftime about how we cant take any opponent lightly and we needed to put the thought of competing with us in the second half out of their minds," sophomore guard Makenzie Silvey said. "We've been focusing on defense all year and we wanted to carry that over into the second half and we were able to do that, which led to a lot of transition offense."
Four Salukis scored in double figures, led by Payton McCallister's game-high 21 points on 7-of-8 shooting, including 2-of-2 from behind the arc. Nicole Martin tallied 14 points and six rebounds, while Makenzie Silvey (12) and Celina VanHyfte (11) also reached double digits.
SIU shot 43.3% (29-of-67) from the field and held the Bearcats to 28% shooting (14-of-50) including just 3-of-15 from behind the arc. Southern scored 36 points off of its 35 turnovers and the Salukis also capitalized on their speed and got out and ran the floor to the tune of 14 fast break points.
"I felt like we finally started to play the pace we wanted to," sixth-year head coach Cindy Stein said. "I hope people saw that we have enhanced our speed and our defense. We still have to fine tune some things, obviously, but I felt like every single kid gave every single thing they had and that's what you want. Im proud from that standpoint."
The Saluki freshmen got to play early and often in the exhibition, as both logged considerable minutes. Caitlin Link finished with two points, four assists and two steals in 10 minutes off the bench while McCallister led all scorers and added four steals and two assists. All 11 Salukis that dressed, played, including newcomer Kezia Martin, who entered the game in the final two minutes and corralled a rebound.
SIU returns to action Friday, Nov. 2 when it hosts Westminster (Mo.) for its second, and final, exhibition of the 2018-19 season. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
