Women’s Basketball wins home opener over SEMO, 60-40

CARBONDALE, Ill. — Three scored in double figures for the Southern Illinois University women's basketball team as the Salukis overcame a sluggish start with tenacious defense to defeat the Southeast Missouri State Redhawks, 60-40 Wednesday, Nov. 14 in front of a raucous crowd of 2,500 area children as part of SIU's Field Trip Day.
The Salukis (1-1) overcame a rough start in which they made just one of their first 10 shots and fell behind 15-3 with 2:04 to play in the first quarter.
"I thought we started out trying to win the game in the first two minutes," sixth-year head coach Cindy Stein said. "I felt like the energy of the kids got to us and we got sped up- making quick decisions, taking quick shots and once we settled down we were able to control the tempo a little bit and take what they gave us."
Southern clamped down defensively over the next seven minutes. The Salukis ran off 18-straight points and limited SEMO to just five second quarter points to build a lead it never relinquished. The five points allowed by the Salukis in the second quarter are tied for the fewest that SIU has surrendered in a quarter since the NCAA went to four quarters prior to the 2015-16 season.
"We got back into the game because of our defense," Stein said. "Our defense is actually what got our offense going. We got a couple of deflections, a couple of steals so that we could have some run outs."
The trio of Nicole Martin, Makenzie Silvey and Abby Brockmeyer did most of the heavy lifting for Southern, as they combined for 78% of SIU's points (47-of-60). Martin scored a game-high 19 points and added eight rebounds and two assists while Silvey scored 17 points, snagged four rebounds to go along with three steals and two assists. Brockmeyer notched her second-straight double-double, and the seventh of her career, with 11 points and 13 rebounds. Brittney Patrick tied her career-high by playing 36 minutes in the win and added eight points, four rebounds and four assists.
"We came out pretty slow and our defense was really slacking," Brockmeyer said. "We came into a huddle and Coach Stein told us that we needed to get it together. I think we really stepped it up on defense and then we started to make plays on offense and stopped being so stagnant."
SEMO cut SIU's lead down to four, 29-25 with 7:53 to go in the third but back-to-back baskets by Silvey and a fast break layup by Martin off a steal by Silvey pushed Southern's advantage back to double-digits.
The Redhawks got to within six to open the fourth quarter but 12 unanswered points by the Salukis sealed the home-opening win.
The win for the Salukis marks the fifth-straight for Southern on Field Trip Day and also the fifth-straight victory over the Redhawks. Southern shot 38.6% from the field and held SEMO to 25.9% shooting from the floor. SIU forced 23 turnovers, tallied nine steals and scored 20 points off of those turnovers.
SIU returns to action on Saturday, Nov. 17 when it hosts the Marshall Thundering Herd for a non-conference clash. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
