
Women's Basketball hosts Marshall on Saturday

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The Southern Illinois women's basketball team will look for its second-straight win Saturday when it hosts Marshall. The non-conference slate begins at 2 p.m. and can be streamed on ESPN3, heard locally on MAGIC 95.1 FM while fans can also listen to the game here.
Series History
• The Salukis and the Thundering Herd will meet for the sixth time in program history on Saturday, Nov. 17.
• Marshall holds a 3-2 edge in the all-time series.
• Last season, SIU snapped a three-game losing streak to the Thundering Herd with a 64-59 victory at Marshall.
• Last year's win was the first for SIU over Marshall since 1993 and the first for Southern over a Conference USA opponent since 1996.
Last Season vs. Marshall
• Rachel Pudlowski made her first career start and scored a career-high 12 points
• SIU's defense forced 21 turnovers.
• Southern also won the rebounding battle, 40-to-30, which was SIU's largest + rebound margin of the season.
• Nicole Martin recorded her second career double-double vs. the Thundering Herd, as she scored 14 points and snagged 10 boards.
Scouting the Thundering Herd
• The Thundering Herd have lost two-straight coming into Saturday's contest.
• Shayna Gore scored a career-best 34 points in Marshall's 99-76 loss at Bowling Green and has reached double figures in both of the Herd's games this season.
• 52.2% of Gore's points thus far this season have come from the 3-ball.
• Marshall was picked to finish 13th out of 14 in the 2018-19 Conference USA Preseason Poll.
• Through two games, Marshall is giving up 80.5 points per game and are shooting three-pointers on 41.2% of their possessions- the 25th-highest average nationally.
SIU versus Conference USA
• SIU plays its first of two Conference USA opponents this season in Marshall.
• The Salukis are 9-21 all-time against Conference USA foes, including a 66-53 loss to Louisiana Tech in the Sweet 16 of the 1987 NCAA Tournament.
• Southern's last win over a Conference USA member at the SIU Arena was on Dec. 15, 1996, a 91-72 win over Middle Tennessee State.
Double Duty
Head coach Cindy Stein will have a full day of basketball on Saturday, Nov. 17. The sixth-year head coach of the Salukis will coach her squad against Marshall beginning at 2 p.m. Following the game, Stein will switch gears and put on a headset and serve as the color commentator alongside play-by-play announcer Connor Onion for Saturday's Saluki men's basketball game against Arkansas Pine-Bluff on 101.5 CIL FM.
Home Opening Crowd
• The announced attendance at SIU's home opener vs. SEMO was 2,667 fans, aided by area youths as part of SIU's Field Trip Day.
• The crowd was the fourth-largest to watch a women's basketball game at SIU and the most since 2008.
Double-Double Machine
• Abby Brockmeyer recorded her second-straight double-double in the win over SEMO on Wednesday with 11 points and 13 rebounds.
• She is the first player in program history to open a season with back-to-back double-doubles.
• Brockmeyer and Drake's Sara Rhine are the only two players in the Missouri Valley Conference to open the 2018-19 season with consecutive double-doubles.
• Her 12 defensive rebounds against SEMO were a career-best and she currently leads the MVC, and ranks 21st nationally, in defensive rebounds per game (9.0).
Opposite ends of the spectrum
• Through two games of the 2018-19 season, the Salukis have already tied the school record for most points scored in a first quarter and fewest points surrendered in a quarter.
• SIU's 40 points allowed in the win over SEMO were the fewest it has surrendered to a DI opponent since a 39-37 win over Central Arkansas on Dec. 2, 2013.

Piloting the Offense
• Brittney Patrick has gotten the start at point guard in each of SIU's two games this season.
• The Bolingbrook, Ill. native tied a career-best with five rebounds, set a career-high with two blocks and dished out seven assists against UT Martin on Nov. 9.
• Tied a career-best in minutes played (36) and led the team in assists (4) for the 14th time in her career in the win over SEMO.
Power of 5's
• Wednesday's win was SIU's fifth-straight over SEMO.
• It was Southern's fifth-straight win on Field Trip Day.
• Was also SIU's fifth-straight home-opening win.
Career Night for Silvey
• Makenzie Silvey poured in a career-high 29 points on 11-of-23 shooting in SIU's season opener at UT Martin, which including a career-best six three-pointers and five assists.
• Silvey's 29 points were the most scored by a Saluki since Rishonda Napier netted 33 vs. Western Illinois on March 17, 2016.
• It was tied for the fourth-most points by an underclassmen in a single game in program history.

• Silvey's 29 points were the seventh-most of any NCAA DI player to open the 2018-19 season and the most by a player from the Missouri Valley Conference.
• Set or tied career-bests in points (29), assists (5), field goals made (11), field goals attempted (23), three-pointers made (6) and three pointers attempted (15).
• It marked the first time since Dec. 9, 2016 that SIU had two players with 20-plus points in a single game. Silvey had 29 points while Abby Brockmeyer added 20 points and 11 rebounds.
Freshmen Debut
• The 2018 recruiting class of Caitlin Link and Payton McCallister made their Saluki debuts at UT Martin.
• McCallister was one of four Salukis to score in double figures. The Columbia, Mo. native had 12 points, five assists and five rebounds.
• It marks the first-ever 10-5-5 stat line by a freshman in their debut in program history.
• McCallister is the 13th Saluki since 1983 to score in double figures in their debut.
• Link played just under three minutes and didn't take a shot in her debut but recorded her first collegiate rebound vs. SEMO.
Martin Named to Preseason All-MVC Team
• The Missouri Valley Conference named Nicole Martin, a 6-foot-1 forward from Jefferson City, Mo., as one of five chosen to the league's preseason all-conference squad. She was joined by Megan Maahs of Northern Iowa, Alexa Willard of Missouri State, Sara Rhine and Becca Hittner of Drake. Hittner, the reigning MVC Player of the Year, was selected as the league's preseason Player of the Year.
• Martin had a breakout sophomore campaign in which she led the team in scoring and finished the regular season ranked in the top-15 in the Valley in six statistical categories.
MVC Preseason Poll
• The Salukis were picked to finish fourth in the Missouri Valley Conference preseason poll.
• Defending MVC champion Drake was projected to finish first, followed by Northern Iowa. Missouri State, SIU and Illinois State rounded out the top-five.
• It marked the fourth-straight season that SIU has been picked fourth in the annual poll, which is the longest streak of Southern being picked in the top-half of the league since the Salukis were picked in the top half every season from 1983 until 1997, including six seasons (83-84, 86-87, 87-88, 89-90, 90-91, 92-93) in which they were chosen as the league favorites.
Non-conference Slate
• Five home dates, four away contests and two neutral sites games make up this year's non-conference slate, which is highlighted by SIU's trip to Las Vegas for the 2018 South Point Thanksgiving Shootout.
• This year's South Point Thanksgiving Shootout will be one of the premier mid-season tournaments in the country, as the eight team field consists of five teams that played in the NCAA Tournament a year ago (Arizona State, Baylor, Buffalo, Louisville, South Dakota State) and a sixth, Georgetown, that advanced to the second round of the WNIT. Southern will take on Hartford (Nov. 23) before tangling with the Arizona State Sun Devils on Nov. 24.
