CARBONDALE, Ill. — Abby Brockmeyer notched her third-straight double-double with 10 points, 10 rebounds and five blocks and Nicole Martin finished with a game- and team-high 17 points to lead the Southern Illinois University women's basketball team to a 58-49 win over Marshall on Saturday.
Makenzie Silvey (12 points), Brittney Patrick (10 points, four assists) also scored in double figures for the Salukis (2-1), who used an 11-2 run over a 6:35 stretch in the fourth quarter to pull away from the Thundering Herd (0-3).
"I feel as though some pieces of our game are getting better but we were a little flat in other areas," sixth-year head coach Cindy Stein said. "We've got to clean that up but I feel better about getting more players into the game and getting more looks at different lineups. I felt like Marshall tried to take our inside game away and when we weren't hitting from the perimeter it made things a little tougher. We had a little battle to see who was going to hit but Abby, Nicole and Ashley were very good inside making things happen."
SIU helped its cause with a 42-to-37 rebounding advantage in addition to scoring 16 points off of Marshall's 20 turnovers. Brockmeyer and Payton McCallister led SIU's efforts on the boards, accounting for 10 and six rebounds, respectively. Ashley Hummel also logged key minutes in the post for the Salukis, as she snagged four rebounds in eight minutes off the bench.
Marshall's Taylor Porter drew the Herd to within two, 42-40 on a layup with 8:47 to go in regulation. A jumper by Martin nearly a minute later gave SIU some breathing room and opened an 11-2 run that ended with Brittney Patrick providing the exclamation point in the form of a three-pointer to put Southern ahead 53-42 with 2:12 to play. It was Patrick's first three-pointer of the season.
"I feel like a lot of teams will play off me because I'm known for not shooting threes," Patrick said. "The more I get into the gym and practice with Coach Jody (Adams) and all of the other guards, the more I have confidence in shooting that shot. Anything I can do to help get my teammates up."
The Salukis also played lockdown perimeter defense, as they limited the Herd to just 14.3% (3-for-21) shooting from behind the arc. Marshall's Shayna Gore, who came into the contest averaging 23.0 points per game of which 52.2 percent came off three-pointers, was held to just five points on 2-of-14 shooting, including just 1-of-8 from 3-point range.
Southern recorded season-highs in both blocks (8) and steals (11) in the win and were led defensively by Brockmeyer and Patrick. Brockmeyer tallied five blocks and added two steals while Patrick totaled a team-best three steals. Six of Patrick's 10 points came in the final 10 minutes of play.
"Brittney is our spark," Brockmeyer said. "Cant say enough about her defense. She just gets after it. We need her every game because when we are starting to get down, Brittney gets a steal and picks up back up."
The Salukis will look to make it three in a row on Tuesday, Nov. 20 at Western Kentucky. Tip-off from Bowling Green, Ky. is set for 11 a.m.
