LAS VEGAS - The Southern Illinois women's basketball team fell to the No. 19 Arizona State Sun Devils, 82-38, Saturday evening to close out play at the South Point Shootout.
The Salukis (3-3) led early in the first quarter and trailed by only four, 16-12, at the end of the period. The Sun Devils used an 11-2 run to open a 25-14 lead and led 41-26 at the break.
From there, Arizona State used its considerable length and size advantage to swarm passing lanes and continually forced SIU to take difficult shots, resulting in Southern shooting just 17.9% from the floor in the second half. The Sun Devils out-scored the Salukis 41-to-13 over the final 20 minutes of play.
"I felt like the first quarter we played the offensive/defensive game plan that we wanted to," sixth-year head coach Cindy Stein said. "Second quarter we got away from it. We started to take quick shots. Our shot selection wasn't very good and we forgot some defensive assignments. It starts snow-balling on you when you aren't scoring, are making mistakes on the defensive end and can't get anything to go down."
Abby Brockmeyer scored eight of her nine points in the first half and provided an answer for the Saluki offense early whenever they needed it. Makenzie Silvey scored all eight of her points in the first half while Nicole Martin added seven points and three boards. Ashley Hummel provided a spark off the bench for the Salukis, as she added four points and four rebounds in 10 minutes.
"As much as (Arizona State) did a good job offensively, we didn't follow up with a good offensive set," Stein said. "We weren't suppose to rush our shot. I don't know how many times our guards came down 1-on-2 and tried to score over 6-foot-4 , 6-foot-5 posts."
Silvey gave SIU an early 7-2 lead with her first 3-ball and her second three-pointer staked Southern to a 10-9 advantage with 4:50 to play in the first. Arizona State again had an answer to go ahead 12-10, but a layup by Rachel Pudlowski tied the contest at 12-all. The Sun Devils responded with an 11-2 run to take control of the game.
Arizona State helped its own cause by shooting 56.0% from the floor, including 52.9% (9-of-17) from behind the arc. It is the best an opponent has shot from the field against the Salukis since Drake made 62% of its attempts on Feb. 2, 2018. The Sun Devils also held the Salukis to 26.0% from the field.
The Salukis return to action Thursday, Nov. 29 when they travel to Saint Louis University to take on the Billikens. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
