Stein will be inducted into the IBCA Hall of Fame at a special ceremony on May 4.
SIU head women's basketball coach Cindy Stein will be enshrined into the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame on Saturday, May 4th at Redbird Arena in Normal, Ill.
"This is a great honor and I appreciate all the amazing things that the IBCA does for our great sport of basketball," Stein said. "It is humbling to be amongst so many talented individuals and teams. I would also like to congratulate all of the other honorees."
A native of Peoria, Ill., Stein attended Richwoods High School and played basketball for Mary Kay Hungate, where she went 20-2 as a senior. She went on to play two successful seasons at Illinois Central College, where the basketball team advanced to the NJCAA National Tournament in back-to-back seasons. During her freshman season, the ICC basketball team won a then school-record 24-straight games, and the following season, Stein became just the fourth player in school history to earn All-America honors with a turn on the second-team in 1981.
From there, Stein transferred to the University of Illinois, where the Illini went 35-24 during her two seasons and advanced to the second round of the 1982 NCAA Tournament. Stein dished out 323 assists during her two seasons, which still ranks eighth in Illini history while her 170 helpers during the 1982-83 season are still the second-most in a single-season in program history. Her 13 assists against her hometown team, Bradley, on Dec. 22, 1982, meanwhile, remain tied for the fourth-most in a single game in school history.
After graduation, Stein began her coaching career as a graduate assistant at Central Michigan, where she earned a master's degree in physical education. Stein made stops as an assistant coach at Miami (Ohio) (1986-87), Cincinnati (1987-88), Bradley (1988-93), and Illinois (1993-95).
In 1995, Stein was named the head coach at NCAA Division II Emporia College, where she turned the sub-.500 team into a National Title contender in just three seasons. In her second season at Emporia, the Hornets went 20-10 and made a trip to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The following season, the Hornets went 33-1, with their only loss coming in the DII National Title game and Stein was honored as the National Coach of the Year by three publications, including the Women's Basketball Coaches Association.
Stein took over at Missouri in 1998 and won 185 games in her 12 seasons as head coach. The Tigers made seven postseason appearances in her 12 seasons, including three NCAA Tournament bids. Stein's players earned a combined 24 All-Big 12 honors with four First-Team selections, and five Tigers whom she coached went on to play in the WNBA.
After a one year stint as the head coach at Illinois Central College in which ICC went 32-4 and finished third at the NJCAA Division II national tournament, Stein was named the 10th head coach in Saluki women's basketball history on April 3, 2013.
The Salukis have undergone a resurgence under Stein, as Southern has posted four-straight winning seasons, including the program's first 20-win season in nine years in 2015-16. SIU also made back-to-back postseasons appearances for the first time in 30 years under Stein and players under Stein's tutelage have set the school record for career points, career rebounds and career blocks.
