Salukis picked second in pre-Swimming and Diving Championship poll

The Missouri Valley Conference released the MVC Swimming and Diving Championship preseason poll today, selecting Southern second.

The coaches of the MVC picked Missouri State, the defending MVC champs, first with 64 points and all eight first-place votes. Southern is second, eight points behind the Lady Bears. Northern Iowa was selected third, nine points behind Southern with 47 and Illinois State is fourth with 41 points. There is a big gap in points separating the top and bottom half of the Valley in the poll. Evansville is fifth with 21 points followed by Indiana State and Arkansas-Little Rock who are tied for sixth. Newcomers Valparaiso were picked last.

Southern has won five meets against MVC opponents this season. The Salukis only loss against an MVC team was to Missouri State in October.

Individually, the Salukis are tops in the League in the 500 and 1,650-yard freestyle where senior Bryn Handley leads the way. In diving, sophomore Beibei Ji leads the way in the one-meter dive.
