
Handley places sixth in the 500-freestyle at CSCAA National Invite

The Salukis turned in strong performances on the first day of the NCAA Zone C Diving Meet in Columbus, Ohio and the CSCAA National Invitational Championships in Annapolis, Maryland.
At the Zone Diving meet, sophomores Baobao Ji, Beibei Ji and senior Rachel Williams attempted to qualify for the NCAA Championship in the one-meter dive. Sophomore diver Eli Mercado attempted to qualify for the men's three-meter dive at the NCAA Championships.
Sophomore Beibei Ji, the defending Missouri Valley Conference Champion in the one-meter dive placed 20th overall in the event with a score of 256.65. To advance to the NCAA Championships, she would have needed to place in the top-eight places. Baobao Ji was 22nd with a score of 253.70. Williams was 52nd.
In the men's three-meter dive, Eli Mercado placed 35th overall. To advance to the NCAA Championships, he needed to be in the top-10.
At the CSCAA National Invitational Championships, senior Bryn Handley led the way for SIU. She was the only Saluki to qualify for the evening's finals. She did so in the 500-yard freestyle in which she placed sixth overall with a time of 4:50.04.
In the women's 200-yard IM, Emma Brazeau was 27th overall with a time of 2:05.63. Abby Kresal was 41st overall with a time of 2:08.85.
On the men's side of the 200-yard IM, sophomore Chris Cole placed 21st overall with a time of 1:52.33.
In the final event of the night, the 400-yard medley relay, Southern's women's team placed 17th. Sophomore Rita Naude, Kresal, Brazeau and Handley swam the race in a time of 3:50.17.
