Swimming and diving continued close out its season today with a near school-record performance at the CSCAA National Invitational Championships and by falling just short of sending a diver to the NCAA Championships.
Â
At the NCAA Zone C Diving meet, sophomore Beibei Ji placed 11th with a final score of 556.20. She was less than three points short of a top-10 finish and a berth at the NCAA National Championship meet. Despite coming up just short of the NCAA Championships, she set a new school record in the three-meter dive.
Â
Baobao Ji was 25th overall in the three-meter dive, Rachel Williams was 41st.
Â
In the men's one-meter dive, sophomore Eli Mercado was 35th overall with a score of 242.70.
Â
For Southern's swimmers, junior Chris Cole led the way at the CSCAA National Invitational Championships. He placed third overall in the 400-IM with a time of 3:52.94, the second-fastest time in program history and the best time in Cole's career.
Â
In the women's 200-yard medley relay, the Saluki team of sophomore Rita Naude, junior Abby Kresal, Junior Emma Brazeau and senior Bryn Handley placed 19th overall with a time of 1:45.11
Â
In the women's 100-yard butterfly, Brazeau and Naude placed 23rd and 24th overall. Both swimmers were less than a second off of qualifying for the evening's finals.
Â
Handley was 32nd overall in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:52.32.
Â
Kresal swam in the 200-yard breaststroke for the Salukis and was 24th overall with a time of 1:04.99.
Â
In the 100-yard backstroke, Rita Naude placed 35th overall with a time of 57.52.
Â
For the Saluki divers, the season is over. All that is left at the NCAA Zone C Meet is platform diving, which Southern will not compete in. For the swimmers, they close out the season tomorrow on the final day of the CSCAA National Invitational Championships.
