The Southern Illinois Women's Golf team will compete in the Missouri Valley Conference Championship starting on Sunday at Sand Creek Station Golf Course in Newton, Kansas. Â
Â
In a pre-championship coaches' poll released by the MVC today, the Salukis were picked fourth at this year's conference championship. Bradley was picked first, followed by Missouri State and UNI.Â
Â
Â
At the MVC Preview in October 2017, SIU finished tied for third with Missouri State. Senior Hanna Netisingha finished fifth. Â
Â
Head Coach Alexis O'Brien said it's important to peak at the conference championship and is ready to close out the season with a bang. Â
Â
The Salukis have had 11 top-10 finishes this season including three first-place finishes and six top-five finishes. Senior Hanna Netisingha and freshman Moyea Russell have both placed first as individuals; Netisingha at the Chi-Town Classic in October, and Russell at the Saluki Invitational in March. Â
Â
"The team is ready to compete," O'Brien said. "I'm confident that due to the team's solid ball striking skills, distance off the tee, and ability to hit knock downs necessary in windy conditions, we will prevail."
Â
Netisingha and senior Alice Ho will be competing in the first two spots for the Salukis followed by sophomore Erica Kerr, Russell and freshman Emilyee McGiles.Â
Â
Four players in Southern's lineup have played in all 28 rounds this season. All have finished within the top-five at least once this season as well.Â
Â
While the Salukis are up against tough MVC competition, the team will also be facing the weather with expected winds between 25-35 mph on all three days of play. Â
Â
"The championship will be a test of last man standing," O'Brien said. "Due to the conditions there aren't going to be any really low scores. We are mentally prepared for the elements. We will try and make bogeys at worst and keep from the high numbers. If we do that we will win."
Â
Due to the weather, the first round's start has been pushed back.  Round one will begin on Sunday with a shotgun start at 12:30 p.m.  while the second round will start at 10:30 a.m. on Monday. The final round will begin at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday.  Live scoring can be found on golfstat.com.Â
