After three vigorous rounds of play, the SIU Women's Golf team finished in third- place finish at the Missouri Valley Conference Championships at Sand Creek Station Golf Course in Newton, Kan.
Southern ended the tournament with a third-round score of 302 and total score of 905. The Salukis third round score tied for 10thbest third round score and the final score ranks seventh in all time low 54-hole scores.
Heading into the final round, the Salukis were three strokes behind first place Missouri State. The Dawgs second round score of 291 tied for the third best second round score in the Saluki record book and the combined score of 603 was the lowest score this season by six strokes.
The Salukis were primed for a top-two finish, but Head Coach Alexis O'Brien said the team just wasn't able to fully keep up with the rounds hitting in the 60's.
Senior Alice Ho (+8) stepped up for the Salukis in her career conclusion. Ho finished the day with a score of 74 and tied for fourth with Jessie Stead from Loyola. Ho's final score of 224 was a career low beating her previous career best of 225. Ho's performance put her on the MVC All-Conference team for the first time in her career.
"I'm so proud of Alice for making the top five," O'Brien said. "She had her best college 54-hole tournament of her career and this is where it mattered the most."
Ho wasn't the only Saluki hitting low on the course. Freshman Moyea Russell (+9) finished tied for sixth and was the lowest scoring freshman at the tournament prompting her to be named SIU's first MVC Newcomer of the year.
"Moyea is a beast. Just a tank," O'Brien said. "This girl hit two Par 5's in two and just sticking it close all day today. She knew she had to beat freshman Emily Snelling to earn Newcomer of the year votes and she came out all three rounds to be the low freshman at the tournament and had the lowest scoring average of all freshman on the season."
Also on the All-Conference team for the Salukis is senior Hanna Netisingha (+12). Netisingha finished her collegiate career tied for 14thwith a combined score of 228.
Missouri State took the MVC title for the second year in a row beating Northern Iowa by 14 strokes. Missouri State's Rachel Johnson was the tournament winner shooting five-under-par 67 today.
The conclusion of the tournament marks the end season for the Salukis. The Salukis have finished in the top-10 every tournament this season including three first-place finishes and seven top-five finishes.
