Southern tallied eight top-48 regional marks during the three-day event.
The Southern Illinois track and field team finished strong on day three of the 51st annual Tennessee Relays as the Salukis notched three top-48 regional marks led by Ricky Hurley's win in the discus.
The Salukis totaled eight top-48 regional marks during the three-day Tennessee Relays, of which Hurley accounted for two. The Fox River Grove, Ill. native moved up to 16th in the NCAA West Region with his shot put mark Friday and now ranks 11th in the region in discus after he uncorked a lifetime-best throw to win his second event title in the discus this season.
Hurley's winning toss of 183'-11" (56.07m) came on his final attempt and was more than three feet further then runner-up Noah Castle of Kentucky. The four-time All-MVC honoree now ranks top-20 regionally in three events as he also ranks 19th in the hammer throw. Hurley currently holds top marks in the Missouri Valley Conference in both the hammer throw and the discus and ranks second to Jared Kern in the shot put.
Marcellus Fletcher notched a top-25 regional mark in the triple jump. The Vinton, Va. native set a lifetime-best with a jump of 50'-6" (15.39m) to finish sixth in a stacked triple jump competition. The five jumpers that finished ahead of Fletcher combined for eight (four first team, four second team) All-America honors, including the event's winner, Donald Scott, who was a four-time national qualifier in the event during his collegiate career at Eastern Michigan.
Fletcher's mark ranks him 21st in the NCAA West Region and is the best jump in the Missouri Valley Conference this season.
Sticking with the triple jump, Kezia Martin cleared a season-best 41'-1" (12.52mw) to take ninth. The two-time MVC Triple Jump champion moved up to No. 32 in the west region with her mark and is the second-best jump in the MVC thus far this season.
The Saluki women's 4x400 relay team of Alicia Reed, Mesha Newbold, Genesis Ewell and Shafiqua Maloney clocked a season-best time of 3:44.44 to place 10th Saturday. Â The mark is also the best in the Missouri Valley Conference this season as Southern looks to repeat as conference mile relay champions.
The star-studded 4x100 relay team of Christian Coleman, Justin Gatlin, Mike Rodgers and Ronnie Baker lived up to the hype, as the foursome clocked the fastest 4x100 time in the world with a time of 38.08.
Kern and Madison Meyer posted top-20 regional marks yesterday, as Kern finished second in the shot put with the fourth-best mark in the west region while Meyer scored a career-high 5118 points in the heptathlon, which are the 16th-most scored in the NCAA West Region thus far this season.
Tyjuana Eason and Bri'Anna Branch both tallied top-30 regional marks during Friday's competition, as Eason's time of 11.52w ranks her 21st regionally while Branch ran 11.58w to post the 29th-best time in the NCAA West Region.
Saluki Hall of Famer Ivory Crockett was honored for his world record in the 100-yard dash. Crockett ran 9.0 on May 11, 1974 at the Tom Black Track. The record still stands, as the 100-yard dash is no longer a competed event since the sport standardized to a 400-meter track.
The Salukis are next at the Jesse Owens Classic, hosted by the Ohio State University from April 20-21.
