A'Veun Moore (shot put) and Luke Horton (800m) posted wins for SIU on the final day of competition.
A'veun Moore-Jones (shot put) and Luke Horton (800m) posted wins to highlight day two action for the Southern Illinois track and field team at the Jesse Owens Classic, hosted by the Ohio State University, Saturday afternoon.Â
Moore-Jones won the shot put with a lifetime-best toss of 50'-00.75" (15.26m) to emerge victorious in a field of 31 throwers. The Mount Vernon, Ill. native was in sixth place after five attempts before she unleashed her winning toss. It is the second-best mark in the Missouri Valley Conference and just .5" off Cassaundra Roper of Indiana State for the top spot in the Valley.Â
Horton ran a season-best 1:50.62 in the 800m to win for the second time this outdoor season. The Harrisburg, Ill. native clocked the fastest 1500m time by a Saluki this season to win the event at the Mondo Team Challenge on Mar. 31. His 800m time is the third-fastest in the MVC this season and inches him closer to qualifying for the NCAA West Regional for the second-straight season. Horton currently ranks 52nd with the top-48 moving on to the regional meet.
Ricky Hurley (discus, shot put) and Shafiqua Maloney (400m) also turned in notable performances on Saturday.
Hurley, who set a PR in the hammer throw Friday night to finish fourth, took second in both the shot put and the discus Saturday. Hurley threw the shot put 60'-0.5" (18.30m) to finish second to Ohio State's Nicholas Demaline. He later threw the discus 177'-0" (53.95m) to claim runner-up honors.
Maloney ran the fastest 400m time in the Missouri Valley Conference this season at 54.46 to finish third. The six-time All-MVC honoree moved up to No. 39 in the NCAA West Region in the event with her season-best time.
The Salukis are back in action at the Lenny Lyles Invite, hosted by the University of Louisville, on Friday, April 27.Â
