Saluki Track and Field heads to Louisville for Lenny Lyles/Clark Wood Invitational

The Southern Illinois men's and women's track and field teams will travel to Louisville, Ky. for the Lenny Lyles/Clark Wood Invitational on Friday and Saturday, April  27-28. The Salukis are one of 20 teams set to compete at Cardinal Park over the weekend.
The women's hammer throw and the men's shot put will kick off Friday's competition beginning at 12 p.m. Friday's events will conclude at 5 p.m. with the men's and women's long jump.
Competition gets underway Saturday at Cardinal Park at 9 a.m. with men's javelin. Events on the track begin at 11 a.m. starting with the women's 100 meter hurdle prelims. The men's discus is the last scheduled event Saturday and is set to begin at 6 p.m.
The Salukis return to competition after competing at the Jesse Owens Classic, hosted by the Ohio State University. Southern took 32 student-athletes to the meet and tallied four individual wins and 10 personal-bests during the two-day event.

The Salukis are one of 20 teams set to compete at the Lenny Lyles/Clark Wood Invitational over the weekend. Southern will be joined by several Missouri Valley Conference foes in Loyola, Illinois State and Evansville while the field will also include student-athletes from Middle Tennessee State, DePaul, Indiana, Eastern Kentucky, Northern Kentucky, Minnesota, Cincinnati, Bowling Green, Butler, Central Michigan, Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Eastern Illinois, Western Kentucky and IUPUI.
Last time at Louisville
The Southern Illinois track and field team broke three meet records and won three event titles at last season's Lenny Lyles-Clark Wood Invitational, hosted by the University of Louisville on April 29, 2017. The women's 4x100 relay team, Lucas Horton (800m) and Jared Kern (shot put) each broke meet records while the sprint relay squad was joined by Kyle Landon (high jump) and Freya Block (hammer throw) in the winner's circle.
Only 1 in the West Region
Ricky Hurley's stellar outdoor season continued at the Jesse Owens Classic, hosted by the Ohio State University. The Fox River Grove, Ill. native notched a pair of personal-best marks in the shot put and the hammer throw and now currently ranks in the top-20 in the NCAA West Region in the discus (12th), shot put (17th) and hammer throw (20th). He is the only male thrower in the West Region, and one of two in the NCAA, to rank in the top-20 regionally for all three events.
Leading the Valley
The Salukis lead the Missouri Valley Conference in seven (four men's/three women's) events. Ricky Hurley leads the Valley in two events (discus, hammer throw) while Shafiqua Maloney posted the fastest 400m time in the MVC at the Jesse Owens Classic last weekend.

The Salukis have 14 marks that are ranked within the top-48 of the NCAA West Region through five outdoor meets. The newest addition to the list is Alexis Roberson, who set a personal-best in the hammer throw at 186'-2" (56.74m) to win the event and crack the top-48 in the west region.

Athlete of the Week
Ricky Hurley was named the MVC Men's Field Athlete of the Week for the third time this season. It marks the 10th time in 12 tries (83%) during the 2017-18 season that a Saluki has been honored as the MVC Men's Field Athlete of the Week. Overall, Hurley's recognition marks the 17th time this season that a Saluki has earned an athlete of the week honor from the conference.
