CARBONDALE. Ill. — The women's swimming and diving team has been projected to finish second in the Missouri Valley Conference by the preseason coaches poll.
Missouri State was picked to repeat as conference champions, receiving all eight first place votes. Rounding out the top-five was Northern Iowa (third), Indiana State (fourth) and Illinois State (fifth). Projected to place sixth through eighth was Arkansas Little-Rock, Evansville and Valparaiso.
The Salukis last won the MVC Championships in 2016 and have finished second or better the past four years.
Headlining the experienced group are 11 individuals who earned all-conference last year, including first team divers Baobao Ji and Beibei Ji. Seniors Emma Brazeau and Audrey Snyder have combined for a total of six all-conference honors and are once again expected to contend at the MVC Championships.
Four Salukis are new to the program coming into the 2018-19 season. The newcomers include freshman Deven Speed and Missouri State transfer Katherine Gray who are expected to provide a boost in the freestyle and backstroke events.
Southern Illinois is set to open the season on October 6th verses McKendree at 11:00 a.m. inside Shea Natatorium.
