Matthis Besard and Frankie Thomas tie for 21st out of 75 golfers

CINCINNATI, Ohio — The Southern Illinois men's golf program placed 12th at the Bearcat Invitational hosted by Cincinnati at Coldstream Country Club. Louisville won the tournament title at 37-under par, 26 strokes ahead of runner-up Arkansas (-11).

"This event was kind of a same story, different week situation for us," head coach Justin Fetcho said. "We keep making unforced errors and not being committed and disciplined for every shot. As a coach, I have to do a better job of putting these guys in different pressure situations in practice so we can figure out how to adjust and adapt to the tournament conditions."

Southern began the day tied for 11th place at 17-over par and their attempt to climb the leaderboard was unsuccessful. SIU fired a 297 (+13) in the final round to finish with a team score of 882 at 30-over par. Out of the 13-team field, 10 entered the tournament ranked top-100 in the latest golfweek rankings.

Matthis Besard and Frankie Thomas led the Salukis, as both tied for 22nd place out of 75 golfers at 3-over par. It was the second-straight tournament that Besard and Thomas were atop of the individual standings for SIU. Nine strokes behind the duo was teammate Sean Mullan at 12-over, followed by Vikar Jonasson at 18-over and Markus Wilhelmsen at 23-over par.

"Frankie and Matt had another good week with top-25 finishes," Fetcho said. "They have carried the load the last couple of events, which is what you expect from your most experienced players. But we all have to find ways to keep improving as we move forward. Both of these guys can take pride in another solid finish and use it to continue to build for the rest of the fall season."

The Salukis will be back in action for its fourth tournament of the fall season, the Wolfpack Intercollegate, from Oct. 5-6 in Raleigh, N.C.
