Senior Laura Carver named MVC Swimmer of the Week

ST. LOUIS — Southern Illinois swimmer Laura Carver has been named Missouri Valley Conference Swimmer of the Week, the league announced Tuesday. This is her first time earning the weekly MVC honor.Â
Carver won a team-best three individual events in SIU's home-opening sweep over Bellarmine and Valparaiso. The Owensboro, Kentucky native demonstrated her versatility in the pool, as she swam to first-place finishes in the 200-yard freestyle (1:57.26), 200-yard breaststroke (2:22.11) and 200-yard individual medley (2:10.33). She also placed second in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 54.76. It was the second-straight meet that Carver won three events.Â
Carver has experienced success in the pool and classroom since her arrival to SIU in 2016. The senior is a three-time All-MVC honoree and swam the second-fastest 200-IM (2:02.88) in school history at the 2019 MVC Championships. Academically, she has been named to the MVC Scholar-Athlete team the last three years.Â
Carver and the Salukis are back in action against in-state competitors Illinois and Illinois State on Thursday, Oct. 17 in Champaign, Ill.Â
