SIU falls to Indiana State in nail-biter

Three Salukis tallied double-digit kills; Martin, Maguire post double-doubles.
CARBONDALE, Ill. — The Southern Illinois University volleyball team suffered a five-set loss (25-20, 17-25, 25-17, 17-25, 9-15) to the Indiana State Sycamores Saturday night inside Davies Gym.
The Salukis (10-12, 2-6 MVC) never trailed in a 25-20 set one win. SIU hit .298 in the opening frame and put down 18 kills- their most in any of the five sets Saturday. In a second set that featured 10 ties and seven lead changes before the midway point, Indiana State pulled away late to even the set score at 1-all.
Southern roared out to a 4-2 lead in the third frame and used a 10-2 run to build a 15-6 advantage that it never surrendered. Indiana State, however, rallied to force a fifth set with a 25-17 win in the fourth frame. With momentum on their side, the Sycamores led from start to finish in the fifth seal to seal the Missouri Valley Conference win.
Lindsey Paulsen had a career night in the middle for the Salukis. Paulsen hit .428 and tied her career-best with 15 kills to go along with four blocks and a dig. Fellow middle hitter Emma Baalman did a little bit of everything for the injury-plagued Salukis, as she tallied seven kills, five blocks, three digs, two aces and an assist.
Hannah Becker, meanwhile, put down 13 kills on 48 swings. It marked the eighth time this season that the Polk City, Iowa native has finished with 10-plus kills. Savannah Sheridan also tallied double-digit kills for the Salukis, as she put down 10 kills and added three blocks. It was the 11th time that the junior outside hitter has notched 10-plus kills and, in doing so, went over 200 kills for the season.
Defensively, Katy Kluge notched 21 digs, three aces and four assists in her second-straight start at libero. Kluge has now tallied 20-plus digs in two matches this season and it marked the seventh time that the Oconomowoc, Wis. native has served multiple aces in a match.
A pair of Salukis notched assist-dig double-doubles as well. Rachel Maguire finished with four kills, 24 assists and 20 digs, while Alayna Martin tallied six kills, 24 assists and 11 digs.
Southern totaled nine aces, its second-most in a Missouri Valley Conference match this season, behind three aces from Kluge and two each from Baalman and Kat Wagner.
