Adam Cernek tabbed as MAC Swimmer of the Week

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Southern Illinois freshman Adam Cernek has been named Mid-American Conference Swimmer of the Week, the league announced Wednesday afternoon.Â
Cernek won a team-best three events in SIU's season-opening meet against McKendree. He swept backstroke events with times of 50.77 in the 100-yard backstroke and 1:51.22 in the 200-yard backstroke. He gutted out a third victory in the 400-yard IM, where he outlasted the closest McKendree swimmer by .21 seconds. The Turany, Slovakia native also swam the first leg of the 400-yard medley relay for Salukis, which placed second overall with a time of 3:26.69.
Prior to SIU, Cernek was a member of the Slovakian National Swimming Team and a three-time European Junior Championships semifinalist. He won four events at the 2019Â Slovak National Swimming Championships.
Cernek and the Salukis are back in action this Friday at 2:30 p.m. for SIU's home-opening meet against Valparaiso and Bellarmine inside Shea Natatorium.Â
