STILLWATER, Okla. – The Southern Illinois cross country teams competed at the 2019 NCAA Midwest Regional Champion on Friday in Stillwater, Okla.
The Saluki women placed 29th out of a 33 team field in the 6K, while the men took 21st out of a 27 in the 10K.
The meet was held at the Oklahoma State University Cross Country Course, which recently underwent a multi-million dollar renovation. The course is regarded as a challenging course with plenty of rolling hills.
The top finisher for the Saluki women was redshirt senior Megan Krolak, who placed 63 spots ahead of her finish at the regional meet last year (150th) with a time of 22:21.6. Fellow senior Olivia Murphy was the next closest Saluki finisher, as she took 120th with a time of 22:53.5.
Freshman Rachel Anderson, who was one of three Saluki women racing in the regional meet for the first time, placed 173rd with a time of 23:40.0. Fellow newcomers Maddy Hurt and Madison Decker took 186th and 196th, respectively.
The University of Illinois took first place after placing runners in a scoring order of 12-14-18-25-39. Individually, Iowa State's Cailie Logue became a back-to-back regional champion as the junior took first with a time of 20:20.6. Loyola University (Ill.) was the top Missouri Valley Conference finisher at the meet, as the Ramblers placed seventh with 227 points.
On the men's side, Cain Hassim led the Salukis with his 89th place finish, crossing the finish line at a time of 32:46.0. Trailing Hassim was junior Chris Edwards, who raced in his first regional meet today, in 109th with a time of 33:04.2. Reid Parsons, another regional newcomer, took 121st with a time of 33.30.4.
Junior Jacob DeWitt took 128th with a mark of 33.31.5, while fellow junior Michael Church rounded out the lineup by placing 180th.
The University of Tulsa took home first in the men's 10K with a scoring order of 3-6-8-9-11. Last year's champion, Iowa State, finished second but had its own individual champion, as senior Edwin Kurgat took home the title with a time of 30:38.3. Bradley was the top MVC finisher, as the Braves took 11th with 310 points.
A total of 38 individuals are chosen to compete at the 2019 NCAA XC Championships following team qualifications. The top-four finishers at each regional event from a non-qualifying team will receive an automatic bid to compete at the national meet, provided that they finish in the top-25 at their respective regional meet. Two at-large bids for remaining runners in a national pool of top-25 regional finishers will also be selected.
