
Women's Basketball readies for Field Trip Day game against Memphis

Southern's single game attendance record could be in jeopardy on Wednesday.
Carbondale, Ill. --- The Southern Illinois University women's basketball team (2-1) welcomes the Memphis Tigers (1-3) to Banterra Center on Wednesday, Nov. 20 for a noon tip-off.
Wednesday's contest will air on ESPN+ as well as on Magic 95.1 FM and marks the annual Field Trip Day game. Local students from around Southern Illinois are invited to attend, free of charge, with over 3,000 expected in attendance Wednesday. The Salukis have won five-straight Field Trip Day games, including last season's 60-40 win over SEMO.
All-time vs. Memphis
• Memphis leads the all-time series, 12-7 in a matchup that dates back to 1974.
• SIU has won two-straight and three of the last four meetings between the two sides.
• The series stretches back to the days when Memphis was known as Memphis State and has several interesting matchups, including one in the Women's NIT in 1983 (L, 77-69) and in Seattle for the Husky Classic in 1988 (W, 62-48).
• Last home win over Memphis: Dec. 11, 2016; 69-61 victory
• Last win over Memphis: Nov. 19, 2017; 68-56 victory
SIU versus the AAC
• The Salukis improved to 48-47 all-time against American Athletic Conference schools with it's 2017 win over the Memphis Tigers.
• SIU also boasts wins over UCF, Cincinnati and Tulsa but a bulk of its record against AAC schools comes from longtime Valley foe and current AAC member, Wichita State. The Salukis were 38-34 all-time against the Shockers.
Stein vs. the AAC
• Coach Stein is 8-8 in her career against American Athletic Conference foes, and 3-2 all-time against the Memphis Tigers.
Last time they met
• The Salukis overcame a three-point halftime deficit to defeat the Memphis Tigers, 68-56.
• SIU shot 62.5% (15-of-24) from the floor in the second half and out-rebounded Memphis, 20-to-14.
• Abby Brockmeyer notched a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds in 34 minutes while Nicole Martin finished with 14 points and seven boards in the win.
• The win for the Salukis was their second-straight over the Tigers, and their first victory at Memphis since Nov. 26, 1985.
Field Trip Day History
• The Salukis have won five-straight Field Trip Day games and average 1,911 fans.
• Southern's 2,667 fans at last season's Field Trip Day win over SEMO was the fourth-largest to watch a women's basketball game at SIU and the most since 2008.

Packing the house
• With 21 local schools and 3,141 kids scheduled to be in attendance for Wednesday's game against Memphis, Southern will approach a school record attendance for a women's basketball game.
• The school record is 3,367 fans when Cindy Stein's Missouri team came to the SIU Arena on Nov. 12, 2006.

Winning their home openers
• Southern has won six-straight home openers under head coach Cindy Stein and are now 23-22 in home openers dating back to the 1975-76 season.
• The Salukis are 6-1 under Stein in home openers including Saturday's 76-65 win over Tennessee Tech.
Seeing an uptick
• The Salukis are averaging 85.7 points per game through the first three games of the 2019-20 season- which leads the Missouri Valley Conference and ranks 14th nationally.
• SIU also leads the MVC, and ranks 20th nationally, in field goal percentage (48.5%) and are ranked 24th in the nation in free throw percentage (79.3%).
Most Points to start a season
• Southern's 257 points through its first three games is a school record, besting the previous high of 242 set during the 1980-81 season.
Points per 100 possessions
• Southern is averaging 117.9 points per 100 possessions- the ninth-best average in the nation.
• Not only do the Salukis rank ninth nationally in the category, but it is the highest average of any mid-major program.
• SIU is doing so thanks to a .97 points per play average- the 10th-best average in the nation.
Cleaning Glass
• The Salukis defeated the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles, 76-65 on Saturday thanks to a healthy advantage on the glass.
• Southern won the rebounding battle, 46-to-32, including a 17-to-5 edge on the offensive glass. The Salukis have won the rebounding battle in all three of their games this season and SIU leads the Valley, and ranks 21st nationally, with a 43.4% offensive rebound rate.
Martin leads the way
• Nicole Martin led the Salukis in scoring for the 29th time in her career in the win over Tennessee Tech, as she poured in a game-high 19 points.
• Martin's 1,083 career points are 11 points shy of passing Kelly Firth for 24th in program history and are 14 points away from passing Jasmine Gibson for 23rd in school history.
• The two-time All-MVC First Team selection is one of four current players in the Valley with 1,000 career points.

Skying high for boards
• Brittney Patrick led the Salukis in rebounding for the fifth time in her career in the win over Tennessee Tech, despite being listed as SIU's shortest player.
• Patrick snagged a career-high nine rebounds- her most since grabbing eight against Missouri State on Feb. 8, 2019.
• 8 of her 9 boards were defensive rebounds- which also was a new career-best.
One shy of Top-15
• Brittney Patrick has 268 career assists- one shy of cracking the top-15 for a career in program history.
• Patrick is also four steals shy of becoming the 30th player in school history to reach the century mark in career steals and would be just the 16th player with 250-plus assists and 100 steals.
